Polish American Heritage Month | October 2020

It’s October and time to celebrate the 39th anniversary of the founding of Polish American Heritage Month.  This year more than ever it’s important to take time to recognize our long-standing Polish-American community, the rich culture they bring to Brooklyn and the important role they play in American society.  The impact of the pandemic has weighed heavily on our city and has been felt by local businesses. Many of those businesses, located in Greenpoint, are Polish-American owned and/or operated and others that cater to the Polish community.  In fact, here are just a few you might consider visiting:  Syrena Bakery, Margaret’s Beauty Corner, and Karczma Polish Restaurant.  While we are all still adhering to safety measures to protect each other from COVID-19, we encourage you to venture out to support these and other Polish shops in your community.

Although the annual Pulaski Day Parade will NOT be held this year due to the pandemic, there are many other ways you can learn about and help to honor and enjoy the Polish-American culture and their traditions.  Click here to learn about the importance of this celebration, ways you can observe this month, and five deliciously steamy facts about pierogi. And speaking of pierogi, you don’t have to go far to taste amazing Polish cuisine, some of the best Polish foods are served-up right here in Brooklyn. If you are looking for something fun and educational check out the virtual events offered throughout the month by the Polish American Museum located in Port Washington, NY.

However you plan to observe Polish American Heritage Month, please do so safely.  Thanks to our Polish-American neighbors for their tremendous history, culture and contributions to our community and our country.
