Broadway Stages is more than a film, television, and music video studio production company. We take pride in being a responsible neighbor, actively supporting economic, social, and environmental initiatives that benefit our community. Together with our clients, we have generated employment for thousands and created innumerable jobs. We work primarily with local businesses and in-house teams for our production needs and our clients do the same when practical. Read about the economic impact our industry is having on our local community. We are dedicated to giving back and actively demonstrate our commitment through support of education, the arts, social and environmentally focused programs. Our sustainability efforts include rooftop solar panels, farms and gardens, and related educational programs. With more than 100,000 square feet of green rooftop infrastructure created across our studios in Brooklyn, we are providing mutual value to our operations, community and natural habitat.
Eagle Street Rooftop Farm: In 2008 Broadway Stages funded New York City’s first-ever fully operational organic rooftop farm. Aimed at advancing the health of the environment and educating citizens about green initiatives, Broadway Stages provided Goode Green with 6,000 sq. ft. of rooftop space in Brooklyn as the setting for Eagle Street Rooftop Farms, a commercially operated green roof program used for urban farming. In partnership with the food education organization Growing Chefs, the Eagle Street Rooftop Farm also hosts an onsite farmers market and a range of farm based educational and volunteer programs. For more information visit Eagle Street Rooftop Farm.
Solar Power: In 2010 Broadway Stages teamed with Greenpoint Energy Partners and Brooklyn-based Solar Energy Systems to install and maintain 50,000 square feet of solar electric facilities on five of our soundstage buildings throughout Brooklyn. With a capacity of 1.6 MW, this project represents one of the largest combined solar arrays deployed on a private facility in New York, and the largest in the TV and film production industry. The solar panels generate 1.2 million kilowatts of energy annually, helping to offset approximately one third of our annual electricity consumption. The solar panels also improve air quality, increase reliability of the power grid during peak demand and create jobs.
Kingsland Wildflowers: In 2016 Broadway Stages collaborated with New York City Audubon, Alive Structures and Evergreen North Brooklyn to create a 23,000+ square foot green roof. Located atop a soundstage in Brooklyn, Broadway Stages donated the space and along with initial funding from the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund, continue to provide financial support for the infrastructure and garden maintenance. Native grasses and wildflowers create a bird- and bee-friendly meadow and serves to divert rainwater runoff. The rooftop is also host to educational programs managed by the Newtown Creek Alliance. Broadway Stages Green Corridor: In 2019 Broadway Stages was awarded a $1.5 million grant by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation’s Green Innovation Grant Program for the installation of a 1.4-acre green roof. The project, being designed, installed and managed by Alive Structures atop our film production studios in Brooklyn, is known as Broadway Stages Green Corridor. With 30,000 square feet of green roof gardens completed, the addition of an anticipated 31,000 square feet of green rooftop infrastructure will help to advance ecosystem services that are critical to habitat and community.
