7th Annual Kindsland Wildflowers Festival at Broadway Stages | Recap

Over a thousand people enjoyed the sights, sounds, scents and savors while celebrating our green rooftop garden meadows at the 7th Annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival at Broadway Stages. Read on for a recap of this fun-filled festival and learn how you can still capture some of the experience!

Located atop one of our soundstages in Greenpoint, the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof and Community Engagement Center was recently the place to be as we hosted the 7th Annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival. Coinciding with NOoSPHERE Arts'  We Are Nature performance series, the blue-sky, soft breeze day offered something for everyone including food and drink from Healthy as a Motha, Mikey Pomodoro, Greenpoint Beer and Ale, and Crystal Dip Elixirs that kept everyone well nourished and hydrated.

Broadway Stages’ 24,000+ square foot green roof garden hosted over 20 local non-profits sharing the message of respect and stewardship for the environment. Leading the pack was Newtown Creek Alliance, stewards of educational programming at Kingsland Wildflowers.  A few of those who also joined the fun included New York City Audubon, Riverkeeper, North Brooklyn Community Boathouse, Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park,  Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, and many more.

All the while, live painting was being demonstrated, and people perused art exhibits like Westerlies, the installation by Broadway Stages’ Arts Residency Award @ Kingsland Wildflowers recipients Ezra Campelli and Jeremy Clemente. The installation, a copse of tall bamboo aeolian flutes, their notes played by the winds prevalent across the rooftop, will be on display all season long.

Live performances took place from 4 pm until the close of the evening. Highlights included insights from the esteemed scholar Fritjof Capra, street dance by Its Showtime NYCBody Poem Puppetry, the music of Syngja, the Roving Typist and an incredible demonstration of live painting by Michel Platnic with model Mathilde Brok Brandi.

If you missed the festival, you can still enjoy the rooftop!  Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages offers open hours most Fridays from 5 pm to 8 pm. Learn about green roofs, local plants, and Newtown Creek, and if you are lucky, enjoy a magical sunset from our iconic green garden rooftop. Please check the website and register if you would like to attend!  You can also plan a visit or educational tour. If it’s a performance you would like to see mark your calendar for September 23, when NOoSPHERE Arts’ will be presenting its next installment of the We Are Nature series Rising and Falling| Earth Ethics, featuring dance and live music.

However you choose to participate, we look forward to seeing you sometime soon at Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages!

Broadway Stages Gives Back | Social Responsibility

Broadway Stages has a long history of supporting initiatives that benefit the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of the community. Giving back to the communities where we operate is at the core of our business philosophy.  During both good times and hard times, Broadway Stages lends a hand to those in need.

Broadway Stages is dedicated to building a strong and sustainable television and film culture in New York; one that brings mutual value to our clients, our operations, the community, and our environment. Our approach to business includes a deep-rooted commitment to provide unparalleled relationship-driven client and community service.  It’s this approach that sets us apart and allows us to make a difference and encourages our clients to do the same.  Even when facing hardships like the 2020 pandemic or the recent WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes.

For years we have had the privilege of supporting numerous community initiatives and programs.  From providing school supplies, collecting, and donating coats and prom attire, to supporting community efforts to fight food insecurity, Broadway Stages has been engaged in meeting the needs of the community.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we provided a 10-month no-cost lease to The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH) allowing them to feed more than 2 million individuals in need during this life changing event.  Today, we proudly serve on the board of TCAH and continue to support their fight against food insecurity.

Earlier this year, we provided a 12-month no-cost lease to the Community Center Services Organization (CCSO), enabling the collection and distribution of food and other necessities, while they find a permanent facility.  And our clients are engaged as well, Apple Studios, that produced “City on Fire” recently made a significant donation of clothing and accessories to CCSO allowing them to distribute high end merchandise to neighbors in need.  And Possible Productions that filmed “The Blacklist” also donated kitchen and household supplies to CCSO.  Our clients understand the importance of giving back and the value it generates in our community.

Our outreach also includes support of organizations that provide much needed community services and programs including the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Sunnyside Community Services, Ujima Community Working Together, the Greenpoint YMCA, Camp Brooklyn, 5 Boros Basketball, Grace Foundation, Kiwanis Club, Los Sures, and others.  In addition, we continue to promote local businesses to establish a strong economic foundation where our community can flourish, and our neighbors can earn a living wage.

We encourage you to read more about our commitment to community and if you missed it, take a look at our Proud blog series that highlights local businesses and organizations in the communities where we operate. To all the non-profit organizations that work to serve and support, we offer our sincere appreciation for your commitment; we are inspired by your dedication and grateful for your continued leadership and service to community.

"Barbenheimer" and the Return of the Summer Blockbuster | Part 2

We are back with part two of our look at summer blockbusters that has experienced quite the reawakening since the pandemic. Led by "Barbenheimer," the weekend of July 21-23 broke the $300 million mark at the box office for the first time since 2019.

If you're looking to escape the heat and watch summer blockbusters in your air-conditioned home, then check out some of these offerings as we take a look back at the history of the summer blockbuster. And be sure to read part 1[1]  first for even more fun summer viewing.

2000s: The Era of the Billion-Dollar Summer Blockbuster

In the first few years of the 21st century, summer blockbusters routinely flirted with breaking the $1 billion mark worldwide. In May of 2000, the two highest-grossing films of the year were released – "Mission: Impossible II" and eventual Best Picture winner "Gladiator." One year later, "Shrek" came out and showed the power of kids' movies to pack a theater. None of these May releases, however, came close to the billion-dollar mark.

In May of 2002, "Spider-Man" ushered in a new era of superhero film, dominating the box office and eventually pulling in nearly $822 million worldwide. Two weeks later "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" came out and would also fall short, earning $645 million. In 2003, May again proved to be the month of choice for the top-grossing summer release, as Disney/Pixar's "Finding Nemo" filled theaters, earning $871 million. Two months later, Disney released its second blockbuster of the summer, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

In the summer of 2004, sequels of previous blockbusters – "Shrek 2," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," and "Spider-Man 2" – performed admirably but couldn't quite crack $1 billion, with "Shrek 2" coming closest with more than $928 million. The next summer, yet another sequel topped the box office, with "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" earning $868 million worldwide. Finally, in 2006 a sequel broke through with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" becoming the fastest film to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The third film in the trilogy, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" would rule the following summer, as would "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," though both fell short of the billion-dollar bar.

In May of 2008, Marvel released its first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), "Iron Man," which performed very well but not well enough to rule the summer. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" released two months later proved that DC Comics had their own superhero who could fill theaters and bring in over $1 billion at the box office. The next summer, the boy wizard returned, with "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" earning nearly $934 million. A pair of kids' films – "Up" and "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" – also performed exceptionally well that summer, as did "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

2010s: Sequels, Superheroes, and More Sequels

Released in June of 2010, "Toy Story 3" was the first billion-dollar summer blockbuster of the decade, continuing the trends of children's films and sequels dominating the box office. Christopher Nolan, who is currently riding high with "Oppenheimer" and broke records with "The Dark Knight," had another big hit in 2010, as his original film "Inception" was the second-highest grossing summer release, earning more than $825 million worldwide.

In the summer of 2011, three sequels – "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" – all earned more than $1 billion at the box office, marking the first time a summer produced more than one such blockbuster. A year later, "The Avengers" became the first film in the MCU to gross over a billion, earning over $1.5 billion worldwide. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" also broke the billion-dollar barrier that summer.

The next few summers would continue the trend of superhero films and their sequels (and children's films and their sequels) dominating, as "Iron Man 3" and "Despicable Me 2" made big bucks in the summer of 2013. A year later, Marvel had another hit with "Guardians of the Galaxy," while "Transformers: Age of Extinction" topped all releases. In 2015, "Jurassic World" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" showed that big-budget action sequels could still reliably crush the competition.

In 2016, several children's films put up a fight against the superheros, with "Finding Dory" topping the year-end domestic box office and earning over a billion worldwide. "The Secret Life of Pets" brought in $875 million over the summer months, and two additional children's films released earlier in the year – "Zootopia" and "The Jungle Book" – also finished in the year's top five. However, these films were no match for "Captain America: Civil War," which topped the worldwide box office for the year and ruled the summer.

The following summer, big-budget superhero films would continue to attract filmgoers, with "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," and "Wonder Woman" topping the charts in the summer of 2017. However, only one summer release would break the billion-dollar barrier that year – "Despicable Me 3." In 2018, the summer blockbuster arrived early, as "Avengers: Infinity War" was released in late April; it remained in the top five into June and ended the year earning more than $2 billion worldwide. That same summer also saw two films released a week apart in June – "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" and "Incredibles 2" – break the billion-dollar mark. The decade ended on a high note, with the late April release of "Avengers: Endgame" setting a new box office record of nearly $2.8 billion in 2019. That summer would see several films earn more than a billion, including two live-action Disney remakes – "The Lion King" and "Aladdin" – and sequels "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and "Toy Story 4."

2020s: The Pandemic Kills the Summer Blockbuster… Temporarily

In 2020 and 2021, no film released in the summer managed to crack the $1 billion mark. However, in 2022 the summer blockbuster returned in full force, as four of the five highest-grossing films of the year (all sequels) were released in the summer – "Top Gun: Maverick," "Jurassic World Dominion," "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," and "Minions: The Rise of Gru."

Could 2023 be the year that sequels finally give way for original films? The success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" show that anything is possible.

Spotlight | It’s Showtime NYC

Welcome to Broadway Stages’ Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants, organizations, individuals, and venues that provide goods and services to our community. This week, we are proud to promote It’s Showtime NYC, a program of Street/Club Dancers from the Bronx-based 501 c-3 non-profit organization Dancing in the Streets. Everyone loved their performances, talent and energy at the Kingsland Wildflower Festival at Broadway Stages’ green garden rooftop, and we know you will too!

People have danced since the first person beat a rhythm on a log. Dance has evolved with time and space but most of all with the music it accompanies. Fifty years ago this summer, a new style of music was pioneered at a party in the Bronx… welcome Hip-Hop!. And with the birth of Hip-Hop came a new style of dance that  started in the streets and quickly spread to the clubs. Broadway Stages celebrated this dance form this summer at the 7th Annual Kingsland Wildflower Festival with It’s Showtime NYC.

Founded in 1984, It’s Showtime NYC is a program of the Bronx-based 501 c-3 non-profit organization Dancing in the Streets. Since its founding, Dancing in the Streets has produced 600+ public performances in unexpected places, introducing audiences to unexplored spaces, communities, cultures, and dance forms.

It’s Showtime NYC cultivates creative excellence within the next generation of Street/Club Dancers. In a challenging economy, artistic pursuits are often squeezed out, but their efforts provide unique experiences connected to careers within the dance and performing arts world.

Moreover, they advocate for and highlight the recognition of Street/Club Dances as seminal American art forms and folkloric movement cultures within the performing arts sector.

Dance is more than just an expression of momentary joy accompanied by music. It can be a vital expression of self for a vulnerable population. This is why It’s Showtime NYC seeks to become a leading talent incubator for Street/Club Dancers in the NYC metro area.

They invest in the dancers’ creative maturity, build community, create space for future ambassadors in Street/Club Dance, and spread the dance forms through schools, stages, studios, and the screen.

Support helps street dancers find a better footing in their artistic careers in NYC and infuse more of their voices into the larger dance landscape. Through It’s Showtime NYC, dancers gain access to the larger cultural economy through performances, local street dance tourism initiatives, teaching, commercial work, and paid administrative work within the organization.

If you are so inclined, they would greatly appreciate your financial support. Your tax-deductible donation goes toward paid weekly rehearsals, professional development opportunities, work opportunities for our dancers, and artistic commissions for the dancers to create new works.

You can also support them by following them on Instagram and Facebook. On their pages, you can see the value of their work, enjoy clips of their performances, and stay informed about where they will be teaching or performing next!

There is an Indian Proverb, “To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak.” Broadway Stages was spellbound watching It’s Showtime NYC perform, and we can say their hearts didn’t just speak. They sang. We encourage you to follow their work, and support local artists!

"Barbenheimer" and the Return of the Summer Blockbuster | Part 1

We are thrilled that people are returning to the movies after the pandemic kept them away for so long. Led by "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" (a phenomenon dubbed "Barbenheimer"), the weekend of July 21-23 broke the $300 million mark at the box office for the first time since April 26-28, 2019, when millions flocked to see "Avengers: Endgame," which would become the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office.

Last summer, "Top Gun: Maverick" was the must-see film, and this year "Barbie" is leading the pack. If you're looking to escape the heat and watch summer blockbusters in your air-conditioned home, then check out some of these offerings as we take a look back at the history of the summer blockbuster.

1970s: The Dawn of the Summer Blockbuster

Many consider Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" to be the first true summer blockbuster. Released on June 20, 1975, it was the first film to gross more than $100 million at the U.S. box office, and people lined up around the block to see it. Two years later, George Lucas released a little film called "Star Wars" to kick off the Memorial Day weekend, and the rest is history. A year later, on June 16, 1978 "Grease" showed that films geared toward women could also dominate the box office, while later that summer "National Lampoon's Animal House" proved that R-rated comedies could draw a crowd. Both films topped over $100 million at the domestic box office that year, making 1978 the first year with two summer blockbusters.

1980s: The Rise of the Sequel

The first summer blockbuster of the decade was naturally the highly anticipated "Star Wars" follow-up "The Empire Strikes Back." Released May 21, 1980, the film was the first to hit the coveted $200 million mark at the domestic box office. In June of 1981, two films opened a week apart that would dominate the summer – "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Superman II." While the original "Superman" was released in December of 1978, every sequel was released in the summer.

The next summer Spielberg would return to the top of the box office with the June 11, 1982, release of "E.T. the Extraterrestrial." Several sequels would also fill theaters that summer, including "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Rocky III." In the following years, sequels and original films that later spawned media franchises dominated, with "Return of the Jedi" topping the 1983 summer box office. A year later, "Ghostbusters," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Gremlins," and "The Karate Kid" led the way, followed by "Back to the Future" in 1985, and "Top Gun" in 1986. By 1988, most of the highest grossing films of the year were released in the summer, including "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Coming to America," "Big" and even the Christmas-themed "Die Hard." The decade went out with a bang, with "Batman" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" as the must-see 1989 summer hits.

1990s: Prestige Flicks, Dinosaurs, and Kids' Films

The decade started with a major shift, as the biggest summer blockbuster of 1990 was the romantic drama "Ghost." The film earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, but it rarely comes to mind when one thinks about summer box office behemoths. In the next few years, action films would return with a vengeance, as "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" brought in big crowds in the summer of 1991.

In 1993, Spielberg topped himself yet again. That June, "Jurassic Park" raised the stakes for summer filmfare, as it came close to topping a billion worldwide ($978,167,947) and set the standard for future summer releases. A year later, "The Lion King" proved that children's films could draw major crowds around the world, as it became the highest-grossing film of the year grossing over $760 million.

By 1996, audiences were craving more action, as "Independence Day" brought millions back to the theater. The decade would end with more big action blockbusters, like "Men in Black" in 1997, "Armageddon" in 1998, and "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" in 1999. The decade also, however, saw many critically acclaimed films compete and dominate the summer box office, including Best Picture winner "Forrest Gump" (1994) and nominees "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) and "The Sixth Sense" (1999).

Come back next week for a look at summer blockbusters from 2000 onward!

That’s a Wrap | Community Proud Series

Broadway Stages is celebrating its 40th trip around the sun by shining the spotlight on the heart of our community – the local businesses and organizations that provide goods, services, and experiences that allow us to thrive and delight in this great city we call home. Just in case you missed it, today we provide a summary of our Community Proud Series that ran May thru July.

At Broadway Stages, we know first-hand what it takes to build a business from the ground up. In 1983, we turned a dilapidated movie theatre on Broadway Street in Astoria, Queens into our first soundstage — the company’s namesake.  We have a soft spot in our hearts for the local businesses and organizations that make up the neighborhoods where we live and work, and we recognize the commitment it takes to provide goods and services to our community.  Over the last three months, we have proudly promoted some old favorites and hopefully introduced you to some new businesses that we featured in our Community Proud blog series.

We kicked off May with the renowned Peter Pan Doughnut and Pastry Shop, and continued on with a diverse group of local employers from the industrial sector, design professionals, and of course, some local favorite treats such as Davey’s Ice Cream, and a few hidden gems like Action City Comics.

In June we featured the borough of Queens with a broad sample of the businesses and organizations that make it great. We took the opportunity to show appreciation to the people and businesses who bring income and jobs to the local community. It was a joy to recognize small businesses like Geena’s Cucina and Morscher’s Pork Store in Ridgewood. But we also shared the good work being done at Queens’s County Farm Museum and the Queens Botanical Gardens.

Finally, we spent July on a tour of the places that make the economy of Staten Island strong and the people proud. And boy-oh-boy, does Staten Island have a lot to be proud of! Did you know Lois and Richard Nicotra own two social enterprise eateries — Pienza Brick Oven Pizza and Commons Café? They have gifted profits of more than $1 million in donations to the Staten Island community through grants to non-profit groups and as higher education scholarships to their employees’ children and grandchildren. And how about Enoteca Maria, the Staten Island restaurant that features cuisine from a different grandmother (‘nonna’) each week?

This is just a tiny sampling of the hard work and dedication of so many people, their businesses, and the organizations they support. We are proud to call them all neighbors. We encourage you to take some time to read over the blogs from our Community Proud series. You can find the entire series on our website HERE.

And stay tuned! Even though our Community Proud Series has come to a close, we continue with our weekly Spotlight series that features local people and places that make us proud and our economy strong!
