Spotlight | Staten Island Proud - Egger’s Ice Cream Shop

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Broadway Stages. In celebration of our 40th trip around the sun, we are shining the spotlight on the heart of our community – the local businesses that provide the essential or simply enjoyable goods and services that allow us to thrive and delight in this great city we call home. We continue our series in Staten Island and feature the local establishments that line our streets, providing a livelihood and rich culture for our neighbors, family, and friends. Join us as we get to know the people and organizations that make our community home. Today, we treat ourselves to a scoop or three at one of the four Egger’s Ice Cream Parlors on Staten Island!

As we head into the dog days of summer, Staten Islanders know the best way to beat the heat is at Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor. This Staten Island staple has been around since 1932. Egger’s takes its name from its original owner, Richie Egger, a trained baker from Germany. He added ice cream to the menu as an experiment, and the rest as they say, is history!

The flagship location moved to Forest Avenue in 1964. Nearly 82 years later, in 2014, West Brighton native Danielle Raleigh took ownership of the shop, equipped with fresh ideas and an enthusiastic attitude to bring Egger’s into the future.

Since 2014, Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor has expanded to include three additional locations: one in the heart of the island at Historic Richmond Town and the other at the chic and modern Urby apartment complex in Stapleton. And as of May this year, you can get the delicious handmade ice cream at Cottage C at Snug Harbor! The cottage features a la carte ice cream, freshly brewed iced hibiscus and green tea, cookies, brownies, and candies for purchase on the first floor.

Raleigh said, “After all the work and planning that goes into a new location, I am excited to see familiar Egger’s customers in this new space. We are so lucky to have such loyal customers!”

True to their roots, Egger’s offers the full gambit of classic ice cream flavors, from chocolate chip and cookies & cream to butter pecan and vanilla. But they also offer flavors of the month, like lavender honey and salted caramel pretzel. You can even enjoy your ice cream in an Egger’s igloo or host an Egger’s birthday party! For a complete list of events, flavor options, and other extraordinary confections, head over to Egger’s website.

Even though Egger’s is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor at heart, Danielle believes it’s essential to stay on-trend with the latest cake designs, contemporary flavor combinations, and ice cream to accommodate those with unique dietary restrictions, including vegan and sugar-free ice creams! Most recently, Egger’s has added ice cream catering to it’s growing list of services.

Egger’s also offers online orders for delivery and pickup. Ice cream enthusiasts can follow their Instagram and Facebook pages to check out the latest specials. So, what are you waiting for folks? It’s summer and time to head over to Egger’s for some fantastic homemade ice cream. When you get there, be sure to tell them that Broadway Stages sent you.

Industry Jobs | Music Supervisor

As one of the premier studio production companies in New York, Broadway Stages works to meet the growing needs of the film and TV industry while also focusing on the needs of our community. We provide the industry with a soundstage or location where they shoot their scenes, but they also need a skilled and experienced workforce. In this series, we look at the various jobs that make a production come to life. We hope it provides insight and encourages you to consider a career in the film and TV industry. This week, we look at the role of the music supervisor.

What Does a Music Supervisor Do?

Previously, we highlighted the role of a composer, which contributes to bringing a director’s vision for a production to life by creating just the right music to help tell a story. But the composer is just one of the roles involved with the various aspects of the music created for a production. The lead role in this area is the music supervisor. Read on to learn more.

The music supervisor handles a variety of music-related tasks for a film or TV production. Careers in Film tells us that, as head of the music department, the music supervisor will “oversee a range of duties from finding a composer, securing original music, starting and finalizing deals with music publishers and record labels, booking studio time, dealing with the musicians union, and consulting with the film’s director on creative music decisions.” According to MasterClass, the music supervisor will view the rough cut to identify places where music will be needed (this is called “spotting”), and they will work with the composer to identify where original music will be needed. They also work to ensure that licensing is obtained for existing music that will be used, to avoid copyright infringement issues.

How do I become a Music Supervisor?

A music supervisor will need to have a broad knowledge of music, as well as be aware of music licensing and intellectual property laws. Attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to manage a budget are also important. No specific degree is needed, although music business programs or courses can be helpful. And, as with most industry jobs, networking can help build contacts. Internships and apprenticeships or getting hired by music supervisors will help one break into the industry and provide opportunities to work up to the lead music supervisor role. Find more advice on the skills and experience needed to become a music supervisor at Careers in Film and Berklee College of Music.

"Godfather of Harlem" Production Designer | Bringing Back the 1960s

The team at Broadway Stages know how much hard work goes into creating a high-quality production, and we love it when one of those hard working, creative individuals gets recognized. The MGM+ series "Godfather of Harlem" has filmed all three of its seasons at our facilities, and we are incredibly proud of the show's success. Production designer Patrick Howe recently spoke to the Motion Picture Association (MPA) blog "The Credits" about his work on the show's most recent season.

"Godfather of Harlem" tells the story of legendary crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), who spent 11 years at Alcatraz then returned home in the early 1960s to find the neighborhood he once ruled controlled by the Italian mob. Over the course of the show, Bumpy took on the Genovese crime family, including Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, and formed an alliance with Malcolm X.

In season three, Bumpy continued to battle for control of Harlem, this time butting heads with the Cuban Mafia from neighboring Spanish Harlem. Bumpy also found himself at odds with the CIA and FBI while uncovering an assassination plot against Malcolm X.

Find out how Howe and his team recreated the look and feel of New York City in the 1960’s by reading this interview, and be sure to watch all three seasons streaming on MGM+. And if you would like to learn more about the duties of a production designer, then read our piece about production designers, which ran as part of our Industry Jobs series.

You can also learn about film and TV industry jobs, training, and more in the Broadway Stages' Industry Resource Guide, which provides information about industry-focused job posting sites; links to general recruiting sites; education and training programs; and state, city, and borough industry information.

We love what we do and we hope you enjoy all of the creative entertainment that comes from the TV and film industry. We are optimistic that the writers, cast and crew of so many wonderful productions will again return to our stages, fairly compensation, and ready to bring their talents to the big and small screen.

Staten Island Proud | Enoteca Maria Restaurant

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Broadway Stages. In celebration of our 40th trip around the sun, we are shining the spotlight on the heart of our community – the local businesses that provide the essential or simply enjoyable goods and services that allow us to thrive and delight in this great city we call home. We continue our series in Staten Island and feature the local establishments that line our streets, providing a livelihood and rich culture for our neighbors, family, and friends. Join us as we get to know the people and organizations that make our community home. Today, Broadway Stages takes you to everybody’s grandma’s restaurant, Enoteca Maria, in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island!

Jody Scaravella grew up with his grandmother (nonna) as the de facto head of the household and the repository of the family culture and identity. His nonna was the one who passed down the family’s culture, and heritage with her culinary traditions.

So, when he opened Enoteca Maria in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island, he thought of a novel idea… invite Italian grandmothers from different regions of Italy to cook their own menus on a rotating schedule.

But there was just one small problem. “I learned at that moment that you cannot put two ladies from the same culture in the kitchen at the same time,” said Scaravella.  “I’m sure it’s with every culture — there’s competition, and there’s proprietary issues and all of that.”

He said customers often share their stories of their grandmothers’ cooking. “People are always talking about their mothers and grandmothers and the way they cooked,” Scaravella said. “It really takes you by the hand and leads you down memory lane.”

Today, real grandmothers from countries around the globe are invited and hired as chefs. “It’s OK to put ladies from different cultures because they don’t really know what the other one is doing,” Scaravella said. “There’s an interest, and the wall comes down.”

The roster of grandmothers with secret family recipes come from Japan, Peru, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Egypt, Taiwan, Azerbaijan, and more. They cook the recipes handed down to them, the recipes that they cook at home for their families, the recipes that make up the fabric of the culture they were born and raised in. We encourage you to visit Enoteca Maria. Talk a look at their calendar to find out which nonna and cuisine will be featured next?

Enoteca Maria aspires to build cultural connections through the universal language of food. Next to eating, the best way to do that is by teaching the craft! Enoteca Maria holds classes where aspiring chefs can get the opportunity to learn from the nonnas in the kitchen. If you are interested, you can learn more HERE.

Another way they try to preserve and respect the legacy of these matriarchs is with the virtual book, Nonnas of the World. The book has recipes from nonnas from 5 of the 7 continents. And they are accepting more every day! For instructions to get included, check out page 5!

Seatings are limited to 2:30pm, 5:30pm, and 7:30pm on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. And before you go, make sure to note that they only take payment in cash and Venmo. For reservations, call (718) 447-2777. And be sure to follow them on Facebook for more stories and photos about the nonnas and browse their thorough website!

Enoteca Maria is truly a remarkable story and a great way to take a culinary world tour without ever leaving Staten Island. Broadway Stages loves that this neighborhood business is built on respect and honor for tradition, no matter where it comes from. We can’t wait to see which nonna is up next! Make your reservation today, and don’t forget to tell them that Broadway Stages sent you!
