Awards Seasons Heats Up With SAG, NAACP Image Awards Nominations
/Earlier this week, the awards season jumped into high gear with the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards and the announcement of the nominees for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and NAACP Image Awards.
The SAG Awards, scheduled for February 26, honor the year's best performances in both film and television. Leading the film race with five nominations each, including the night's biggest prize Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, are the Irish dark comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin" and the sci-fi fantasy "Everything Everywhere All at Once." Both films have a nominee in a leading role and three nominees in supporting roles. Recent Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell leads the cast of "Banshees," with Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson, and Barry Keoghan nominated for supporting roles. Michelle Yeoh, another recent Golden Globe winner, leads the cast of "Everything," with support from Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, and recent Golden Globe winner Ke Huy Quan. They will compete with the casts of "Babylon," "The Fabelmans," and "Women Talking" for the top prize.
"The Whale" earned a pair of nods for lead actor Brendan Fraser and supporting actress Hong Chau. Recent Golden Globe winners Cate Blanchett, Austin Butler, and Angela Bassett earned nominations for their respective performances in "Tár," "Elvis," and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
On the television side, "Abbott Elementary," "Barry," and "Only Murders in the Building" are the top comedies to beat. Each is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, with HBO's dark comedy "Barry" earning two additional nominations for Bill Hader and Anthony Carrigan in the category Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. ABC's "Abbott Elementary" nabbed show creator and recent Golden Globe winner Quinta Brunson a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" earned nominations for its two male leads, Steve Martin and Martin Short. Another comedy that earned multiple nominations is Hulu's "The Bear," up for its ensemble cast and lead actor Jeremy Allen White, who won his first Golden Globe earlier this week. The final nominee for comedy ensemble is HBO's "Hacks," which also earned a nod for lead actress Jean Smart.
Leading the drama field is Netflix's "Ozark" with four nominations, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Lead actor Jason Bateman earned a nod, as did lead actresses Julia Garner and Laura Linney. Also nominated for drama ensemble is the cast of AMC's "Better Call Saul," which earned individual nominations for lead actors Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks. Rounding out the ensemble field are Netflix's "The Crown,"
Apple TV+'s "Severance," and HBO's "The White Lotus." "Severance" star Adam Scott will compete in the lead actor field as well, while Elizabeth Debicki and recent Golden Globe winner Jennifer Coolidge will compete in the lead actress category for their respective roles in "The Crown" and "The White Lotus." Zendaya, who earned a Golden Globe this week for her lead role in HBO's "Euphoria," rounds out the lead actress field.

The NAACP Image Awards, presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, honor the year's top performers in film, television, theater, music, and literature. The awards ceremony will take place on February 25.
"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" leads the film race with 12 nominations, while "The Woman King" earned the next most with nine. Both films are up for Outstanding Motion Picture, and stars Angela Bassett and Viola Davis will also compete for the night's top prize: Entertainer of the Year. Women dominate the ballot this year, with Mary J. Blige, Quinta Brunson, and Zendaya rounding out the nominees for Entertainer of the Year. "Wakanda Forever" also earned nominations for lead actress Letitia Wright, supporting actor Tenoch Huerta, and supporting actresses Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, and Lupita Nyong'o. "The Woman King" earned nods for lead Viola Davis, supporting actress Lashana Lynch, and supporting actor John Boyega. Both films will compete for the coveted Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture prize, alongside "Till," "A Jazzman's Blues," and "Emancipation."
On the television side, "Abbott Elementary" leads the TV and streaming categories with nine nominations. Star Quinta Brunson is the frontrunner to win Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Supporting actors Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis and supporting actresses Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph also earned nods.
