Summer at Eagle Street Rooftop Farm

For about 150 years, the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn was place of concrete and heave industry. Over the years, we have seen a lot of change including an urban rooftop garden and other green roof infrastructure. Since 2008, Eagle Street Rooftop Farm has played a lead role in brining the ‘green’ back to Greenpoint. Three stories above the neighborhood at 44 Eagle Street sits the 6,000 square-foot rooftop organic Farm.

Annie Novak, the co-founder and farmer of Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, and her team not only provide a green footprint to Brooklyn, but also give the community an opportunity to eat local, farm-to-table produce. Eagle Street Rooftop Farm is owned by Broadway Stages and was made possible by the generous support of Gina Argento and family.

As the 2022 growing season ramps up, keep an eye on the Farm’s Facebook and Instagram pages for summer announcements about the market and other news! Each summer Eagle Street Rooftop Farm offers a farmer’s market where you can shop for organic seasonal vegetables, greens, and herbs (both culinary and medicinal). The first Volunteer-Market Day at the farm is on Saturday, June 4th from 10 am - 12 pm. Walk-ins are allowed but it is best to sign up to help Annie gauge the capacity and to collect emails in case she needs to cancel due to weather. You can sign up here: Volunteer-Market Day @ Eagle Street Rooftop Farms.

Copies of Annie’s book The Rooftop Growing Guide: How to Transform Your Roof into a Vegetable Garden or Farm and Eagle Street Rooftop Farm T-shirts designed by Greenpoint’s own Duke Riley are also available.

Farm items are also available through Archestratus Books + Food at 160 Huron Street in Greenpoint. During the fall harvest season, make sure you stop by for a bottle of Awesome Sauce, made using the Farm’s signature hot peppers.

The Farm also has fun and educational programs offered by Growing Chefs who host 2-hour learning sessions during the Farmer’s market. This program, founded by Annie, educates children and adults about the benefits of greenroofs, city composting, beekeeping, growing food in New York City, and cooking locally. Eagle Street Rooftop Farm also offers seasonal volunteering and apprenticeship opportunities. Be sure to add a trip to the Farm to your schedule - soak up the sun, enjoy the flowers and pick up some organically grown produce!
