25th Brooklyn Film Festival | June 3 - 12
/From June 3rd through the 12th, the Brooklyn Film Festival (BFF) will celebrate its 25th edition themed “Unthinkable.” The BFF is a festival for and by independent filmmakers. Much like Broadway Stages, BFF is proud to shine the spotlight on Brooklyn as a center for cinema, creative freedom, and artistic excellence. BFF categories include Narrative and Documentary features, Short Narrative and Documentary films, and Experimental and Animation films.
Marco Ursino, BFF Executive Director, said, “It is undeniable that we are living in divisive times, where every political and social current creates and follows its own fabricated truth. In such a world, any profound statement is destined to please some, while it offends others. What we used to define reality, has been carefully hidden, to the point that it has become almost unthinkable.”
He continued, “With our 25th edition, BFF wants to reignite the audience’s imagination, offer an opportunity to revisit reality, and reinforce the Unthinkable, by presenting 145, uncensored film projects from every corner of the world.”
145 films will be competing for the Grand Chameleon Award. In addition, the BFF will hand out 30 awards with prizes totaling about $50,000 in cash, film services, and products. Moreover, BFF is a qualifying festival for the Canadian Screen Awards. The British Academy Awards (BAFTAs), the American Academy Awards (Oscars), and the Canadian Screen Award have all recognized past BFF award winners.
BFF also hosts many filmmaker events and opportunities to network and get involved including the KidsFilmFest (KFF), that consists of several shorts, live-action films, and documentaries. In fact, film writer, director, producer and NYC native Lynn Dow, who filmed “Compassionate Release” at Broadway Stages’ Staten Island campus at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, is part of the KFF. Her short film, “It’s Alright Dad” will be featured among productions presented to the age group 8 to 15. Tickets for Program 2 on Saturday, June 4, are available here.
Windmill Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn will host this year’s festival. Convenient online viewing is also available. You can buy passes for the indoor and virtual venues online now. Part-time and full-time volunteering positions are also currently available.
