SPOTLIGHT: Lo & Sons | Brooklyn
/Welcome to Broadway Stages’ Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants, organizations, individuals, and venues. We encourage our readers to join us in supporting these stakeholders who help to advance local economic, social, and environmental growth.
This week, we continue our Spotlight on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month by diving into the story of Brooklyn’s own Lo & Sons and the journey that led them to create some of the most innovative and sustainable luggage and travel gear on the market today.
At the age of 65, Helen Lo, mother of Jan and Derek Lo, set out to find the perfect bag that would keep up with her frequent travels. Unfortunately, the options were either too heavy, too frumpy, or pocketless black holes. She felt like she was always dragging, lugging, or schlepping her bags around. After watching their mother abandon yet another bag, her eldest son Jan suggested she invent one herself. Jan did the consumer research, product design, and helped lead the charge in finding a manufacturer. Derek helped build their website, develop the branding, and execute their marketing strategy. And both devoted sons set out to help make Helen’s dream a reality.
Today, Lo & Sons carries a broad variety of fantastic, sustainably produced products. Everything from backpacks and duffels, to masks and apparel, all in both men’s and women’s styles. They’ve also been featured in a number of notable publications such as Forbes, Travel + Leisure, and Refinery 29, and even appeared on The Today Show!
