Holiday Lights in our City
/You can’t miss it! Everywhere you go… bells are ringing, and lights are proudly displayed to celebrate the holiday. Whether Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanza the lights are on, and we are honored to play a part in lighting up our communities.
The History of Christmas Lights
The practice of illuminating the Christmas tree began in Germany during the 17th century and spread out into other countries of Eastern Europe. The candles were attached to the tree using wax or pins, something we woud never consider today due to the safety hazards.
The first strand of electric holiday lights is said to be created by Edward Johnson in 1882. He installed them in the window of his home in NYC for passersby to enjoy. While not initially affordable for most during that time, costing an equivalent of $300 today, they were a much safer option than the tradition of lit candles. Within 50 years however, electric holiday lights had become well established as an annual tradition. We sure have come a long way since then.
Today, holiday lights have become a common and cherished tradition. Broadway Stages is proud to be a part of that tradition across our city. From Maspeth in Queens to the streets of Manhattan Avenue in Brooklyn, and the lighting of the open-air menorah in North Brooklyn – a reminder that light can transform darkness – we are proud to spread the joy of the season by sponsoring holiday lights for all to enjoy.
