Business Spotlight | Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Welcome to Broadway Stages’ Business Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants and venues in the communities where we have operations. We encourage our readers to join us in supporting these establishments and advancing local economic growth.

The sound of wind brushing through trees, water running through a creek, a lush quiet garden — not usually what we expect in New York City. We’ve become so accustomed to the man-made noises like car horns, the subway, and indistinct chatter, that we often forget just how nice it can be to stop and listen to the soothing sounds of nature that are literally just around the corner, at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG). Folks, this is exactly what you need to calm the mind and get away from it all if only for a short while.

BBG is an urban botanic garden that connects people to the world of plants, fostering delight and curiosity. BBG was founded in 1910 and opened in May of 1911. The first display garden was conceived to showcase and conserve native plants and included wildflower beds arranged systematically by plant family and evolutionary relationship. Over the years BBG has worked to keep pace with change; aging infrastructure has been replaced with modern technologies and greener practices, and they have expanded education and community programs that support environmental stewardship. Their aim is to remain a vital resource for the larger community, which is especially helpful during these challenging times.

The Brooklyn Paper’s Ben Verde reports that the BBG will debut their Guided Winter Walks program this month. The program entails two guided audio tours as well as two site-specific sound installations. Participants will be prompted to observe not only the beautiful foliage around them, but also the emotions evoked by the fauna that surrounds you in the Garden. Visitors can experience nearly all of what the botanic garden has to offer including the Water Garden, the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden, and the Osborne Garden. This guided audio program will run from February 26th until May, so you have plenty of time to stop by and soak up some natural splendor.

Tickets and hours of operation can be found on the BBG’s website. Be sure to read about their COVID-19 protocols that are in place to help keep us healthy and safe while enjoying nature. Visit their Instagram and Facebook pages to see what you can expect to see when you visit. If this guided audio tour sounds like the perfect opportunity to get away from it all, then we encourage you to head over and experience BBG for yourself! Grab your mask and coat and tell them Broadway Stages sent you.
