Read Across America Day | March 2
/March 2 is Read Across America Day, part of the year-round Read Across America initiative, and coinciding with National Reading Month. Started by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, Read Across America encourages children and teens to read, and fosters diversity and inclusion among the younger generation by encouraging them to read not only about characters like themselves, but also those who are different.
Visit the NEA website for ideas on how you can engage young readers, including ideas for celebrating virtually or physically distanced, such as reading aloud, hosting mystery readers, and having a reading obstacle course. You can also find information about their partner, Kid Lit TV, that provides children an opportunity to hear authors and illustrators read their works. Finally, check out their calendar that provides monthly recommendations for books with a diversity and inclusion focus for young, middle grade, and young adult readers. March features books that cultivate compassion, to help kids learn to see from others’ perspectives. And don’t forget to check out ways you can celebrate reading all year by participating in online classes at our local public libraries:
Join Broadway Stages in spreading the word about this important reading initiative that can open our kids to a world of imagination and opportunities.
