Celebrating the Arts: Film and TV Industry Education | CUNY CSI

In our “Jobs in the Industry” blog series, we have looked at the various roles that make film and TV productions come to life. A common theme that we have seen as we have researched the experience and skills needed for many roles is that often no formal education or film school experience is required, and that on-the-job experience is key to working one’s way up the career ladder. However, formal degrees and film school have been acknowledged as good ways to get a strong understanding of filmmaking and related areas, as well as ways to find opportunities to gain real-life experience. As they say, “knowledge is power,” so today we encourage aspiring film and TV professionals to check out the numerous colleges, universities and vo-tech schools that offer cinema and media-related courses, as well as trades needed in the industry. Today, we spotlight an NYC-area educational institution, The City University of New York’s [CUNY] College of Staten Island [CSI].

Broadway Stages actively supports education in our community, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). CUNY CSI’s Department of Media Culture offers students the opportunity to build a solid understanding of film, media, and communications, including practical and field experience. They offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema Studies and a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. They also offer minors in Media Studies, Corporate Communications, Cinema Studies, Journalism, and Digital Design and Media. In addition, they offer a Master of Arts degree in Cinema and Media Studies.

Check out the CUNY CSI Department of Media Culture website to explore their programs and courses that can help you gain knowledge and skills to help you build a successful career in the film and TV industry.
