Polish American Folk Dance Company

October is Polish American Heritage Month and National Arts & Humanities Month. To honor Polish Americans' values, culture, and contributions, join Broadway Stages in learning more about the Polish American Folk Dance Company and its efforts to preserve and perpetuate the spirited songs and dances of Poland.

Renowned Polish dancer Marie Rambert once said, "We want to create an atmosphere in which creation is possible." Frances Wesołowska-Popławska was of a similar mind when she created the Polish American Folk Dance Company (PAFDC) in New York City in 1938. As this was during the Great Depression, she needed the help of sympathetic friends. She found such friends in the Polish Workmen's Aid Fund.

The group's original members were the young adults and children of the Polish-American Aid Fund's managing board, who were soon joined by new members. Wesołowska-Popławska wanted to preserve Polish folk songs and dance among Americans of Polish descent. But she put her signature on the group's repertoire by combining traditional folk dances with the technique of classical ballet. This legacy remains to this day.

Today, the PAFDC's performances pull from multiple arrangements of all five Polish national dances and over 25 folk dance suites from various regions of Poland. Central to their catalog are dances from ancient Polish tradition. These dances include the Dożynki (harvest festival), Andrzejki (St. Andrew's Eve), and Jasełka (Nativity scenes). But with the spirit Wesołowska-Popławska infused initially in the group, they also perform authentic and stylized interpretations of the dances, each dynamic and unique to the region of its origin.

A story about the PAFDC must mention the costumes. Polish folk costumes play an essential role in the country's culture. The variety of designs, decorations, and embroideries can tell a lot about the person in the traditional outfit. Today, the company owns over 600 individual costumes, many made in Poland using traditional methods and materials.

But in the beginning, Frances Wesołowska-Popławska started with nothing. With financial and research assistance from the Kościuszko Foundation and the Polish-American Aid Fund, she could outfit dancers. Over time, the costume collection grew with the help of dedicated PAFDC mothers and volunteers. Cecelia Pelc was especially noteworthy for her hard work in this regard. Today, dancers continue to lend their time and energy to assist with repairs and upkeep.

The PAFDC enjoys a reputation as one of the world's premiere Polish folk dance groups. The company is proud to work with multiple workshops across Poland to build the collection and ensure its authenticity and lasting beauty. The company has attended nine World Festivals of Polish Folk Song & Dance in Rzeszow, Poland. It is one of the founding members of the Polish Folk Dance Association of the Americas. They have even performed for such dignitaries as Pope John Paul II, Princess Grace of Monaco, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and Lech Walesa.

If you want to participate in this rich tradition, you can join by clicking here. No experience is required! You can also learn more and find places and times for their performances by following them on Instagram and Facebook.

Broadway Stages feels a kinship with the Polish American Folk Dance Company. We use the arts to practice steadfast values based on decades of experience and a heritage steeped in principled tradition and community focus. We encourage you to attend one of their performances and support their efforts to preserve and perpetuate Poland's spirited songs and dances in the melting pot of America. And when you go, tell them Broadway Stages sent you!

NYC Bird Alliance Honors Two Bird Champions

Immediate Past President Karen Benfield (left) and current Board President Mike Yuan (right) Photo: Jennifer Gonzeles

On October 1, NYC Bird Alliance hosted the annual Fall Roost, a fundraiser and celebration of respected allies. As a member of the board, Broadway Stages was proud to be among the sponsors of this event that brought conservationists, birders, and community leaders like New York City Council Member Gale Brewer together. They were united in their desire to connect all New Yorkers with biodiversity and inspire conservation action.

It was a glamorous evening at Tavern on the Green. Attendees met with old friends and new acquaintances while tasting the hors d'oeuvres, dim sum, and artisanal sliders. They enjoyed champagne and specialty cocktails provided by El Buho Mezcal to wash it down.

At the heart of the evening was the recognition of two valued Alliance friends. Karen Benfield was thanked for her visionary leadership as past board president from 2020 to 2024. Current Board President Mike Yuan spoke of his gratitude for Benfield’s guidance of the Alliance through challenging times and positioning it for future success.

Dr. Claude Bloch was also honored with the “Impact in Birding” award. Executive Director Jessica Wilson thanked Dr. Bloch for his more than 35 years of commitment and support of the Alliance's mission and programs, including the organization's annual winter lecture series.

The evening also raised funds to protect birds and engage all New Yorkers. Proceeds from the 2024 Fall Roost provide critical operating funds to support the Alliance's mission to protect wild birds and their habitat across the City's five boroughs, improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. If you didn't get the chance to support the 2024 Fall Roost, it's not too late! You can donate online by clicking here or contact Matthew Coody at mcoody@nycbirdalliance.org or 646.502.9611 to contribute in another way.

Broadway Stages is proud to be an advocate for the NYC Bird Alliance. We encourage you to participate in one of the NYC Bird Alliance's many activities. You can also learn more about the Alliance, its mission, and its events by following them online on Instagram and Facebook. Fall in New York City is a great time and place to appreciate migratory birds!

Get In The Election Spirit With Fun Films

Next month, Americans will do their patriotic duty and go to the polls. They will be voting not just for president, but for U.S. Senate, House and local seats, and various referendums. In honor of Election Day, check out one of these entertaining election-themed films.

"The Candidate" (1972)

Robert Redford charms his way through "The Candidate," a dramedy about a public interest lawyer running for a U.S. Senate seat held by a heavily favored Republican incumbent.

Believing that the race is already decided before it's even begun, political consultant Marvin Lucas (Peter Boyle) seeks to recruit a Democratic candidate to run against the popular California Sen. Crocker Jarmon (Don Porter) in the upcoming election. With no expectation of actually winning, idealistic lawyer Bill McKay (Redford) agrees to enter the race so he can have a platform to spread his progressive message.

Can McKay overcome the odds and win over the public without compromising his values? Or will he get swallowed up by the political machine?

"Bob Roberts" (1992)

Tim Robbins wrote, directed, and starred in "Bob Roberts," a prescient mockumentary that follows a senatorial race between Bob Roberts (Robbins), a conservative Republican folk singer and billionaire businessman, and the incumbent Democratic Sen. Brickley Paiste (Gore Vidal).

Roberts travels across Pennsylvania rallying up fervent crowds with his pro-capitalism, anti-social justice message while a zealous reporter (Giancarlo Esposito) investigates shady business dealings and ties between Roberts' anti-drug charity and a CIA drug trafficking scheme. British documentarian Terry Manchester (Brian Murray) captures all the action along the campaign trail.

"Wag the Dog" (1997)

In Barry Levinson's satirical farce "Wag the Dog," the U.S. president finds himself caught up in a sex scandal shortly before Election Day. In an attempt to save the president's reelection bid, adviser Winifred Ames (Anne Heche) hires spin doctor Conrad Brean (Robert De Niro) to find a way to distract voters and the media from the scandal.

Brean partners with Hollywood producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman) to concoct a fictional war in Albania. Things quickly spin out of control when the CIA, a folk singer (Willie Nelson), and an off-kilter Army sergeant (Woody Harrelson) get involved.

"Bulworth" (1998)

Warren Beatty co-wrote, directed, and starred in "Bulworth," a dark comedy about a U.S. senator so disillusioned with his life and American politics that he arranges for his own assassination in the midst of his reelection campaign.

The once progressive California Sen. Jay Bulworth (Beatty) has gradually shifted to the right and succumbed to temptation, accepting donations from large corporations to do their bidding. At a campaign event, the world-weary and drunk senator with nothing left to lose decides to speak his mind. His newfound candor completely upends the race, winning over the public, including a young activist named Nina (Halle Berry).

"Election" (1999)

The satirical film "Election" made Reese Witherspoon a star and put co-writer and director Alexander Payne on everyone's radar. The dark comedy centers on high school civics teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) and his overeager and overachieving student Tracy Flick (Witherspoon), who is running unopposed for student body president.

As his personal life spirals out of control, McAllister finds the idea of spending afternoons working alongside the annoyingly perky and perfect Flick unbearable. He takes matters into his own hands by convincing a popular but not-very-bright football player named Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to run against her.

Flick seeks to win at any cost, but McAllister has authority as well as a few tricks up his sleeve. Who will win? The ambitious and not-always-ethical Flick or the dimwitted but kindhearted Metzler?

"Long Shot" (2019)

Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen shine in the raunchy romcom "Long Shot," a title with dual meaning as an unlikely candidate enters into an even unlikelier romance.

U.S. Secretary of State Charlotte Field (Theron) learns that the president will not pursue a second term, so she seeks his endorsement to start her own campaign. At a fundraising event, she runs into an old acquaintance, Fred Flarsky (Rogen), who recently quit his job as a journalist. Against the wishes of her chief of staff, Field decides to hire him as her speechwriter.

Sparks fly as the two grow closer, but Field has difficult decisions to make. Can their relationship survive the high-stakes pressure of a presidential campaign? Can she stay true to her beliefs and still win the race?

We hope these films will get you in the election spirit! And remember to cast your votes on November 5 (or before, as local options allow).

Spotlight | Pierozek

Welcome to Broadway Stages' Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants, organizations, individuals, and venues. October is Polish American Heritage Month. Join Broadway Stages in honoring Polish Americans' values, culture, and contributions during this observance! This week, we dine on pierogies at Pierozek in Greenpoint!

If you don't know, pierogies are Polish pan-fried dumplings filled with potatoes and other ingredients, such as eggs, dill, and scallions. The word Pierozek translates to "little pierogi." But in Greenpoint, it means so much more. It is a taste of home or a journey to Europe. Some say the restaurant Pierozek in Greenpoint ranks above others. In fact, it is the Michelin Guide's only Polish restaurant in America.

Michelin rated Pierozek "Bib Gourmand," which recognizes excellence at a lower price point. The guide called the cuisine "fluffy and heartwarming." A Yelp reviewer noted, "What a gem. The ingredients are fresh, everything on the menu is fantastic, and the whole place exudes a cool BKN vibe. The service is warm and wonderful. The pierogi collaboration concept is an absolute winner. Notwithstanding the fact that I'm 0% Polish, this feels like home cooking. Bravo." And a Google Reviewer added, "This place serves the best pierogi I have ever had outside of Poland. Kudos to the owner for keeping it so authentic and delicious. Service was excellent with attention to every detail."

Pierozek makes 1,000 to 3,000 pierogi — by hand — each day. A traditional pierogi is filled with potatoes, eggs, dill, and scallions. They can also come with sauerkraut and mushroom, meat (pork shoulder), jalapeño, and spinach. Pierozek also offers Pierogi Tatarskie, filled with potatoes, eggs, dill, and scallions and garnished with sizzling bacon. Many swear by the Kaszanka Pierogi, which offers lightly roasted buckwheat mixed with beef and pig blood sausage and spices.

But Pierozek has been putting their own spin on the pierogi. They offer Murray's Cheese pierogies filled with Murray's savory Irish Cheddar, bacon, and creamy potato topped with crispy bacon and fresh chives. Or perhaps the Paulie Gee pierogi, a collaboration the restaurant is currently doing with nearby pizzeria Paulie Gee's. These dumplings are filled with soppressata, tomato sauce, mozzarella, and pecorino, then drizzled with hot honey. And if you have a sweet tooth, the raspberry and sweet cheese pierogies are sure to please.

To accompany the delicate parcels, diners can feast on a hearty bowl of borscht, a crispy croquette, and some golabki (cabbage stuffed with pork, rice, and tomato-basil sauce). Add some kielbasa or a seasonal kaszanka blood sausage to your order, and make sure to include some whole-grain mustard! And wash it all down with a cocktail. Consider a Polish Old Fashioned with plum vodka, lemon juice, and Angostura bitters and a czarna porzeczka with blackcurrant vodka, lime juice, and orange liqueur.

Pierozek is open Monday through Saturday from Noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from Noon to 8 p.m. You can game-plan your visit by viewing their menu here, or you can order online. You can feast your eyes using their Instagram page and keep in the loop on Facebook.

October is Polish American Heritage Month, and Greenpoint is the place to be. Alexandra Kucharski, proprietor of Pierozek, told the Michelin Guide, "It means everything to us to keep the Polish tradition alive here for our grandparents. We're happy that we still have a couple of generations left, and we hope that they keep staying here."

Broadway Stages knows Greenpoint offers the best Polish food in New York City. Choosing where you want to satiate your appetite can be hard. But now you know that Pierozek needs to be high on your list. We encourage you to have a meal at Pierozek and immerse yourself in the rich Polish culture throughout Greenpoint. And when you do, be sure to tell them Broadway Stages sent you!

80th Annual Columbus Day Parade | October 14

October 14 marks the 80th Annual Columbus Day Parade, the nation's largest celebration of Italian American culture and heritage. Starting at 11:30 a.m., marching bands and colorful floats will proceed along Fifth Avenue, from 47th Street to 72nd Street.

Spectators will wave their Tricolor flags while they are treated to traditional dances, authentic food, and folkloric performances. The famous Verrazzano Float will also return to celebrate the 500th anniversary of explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano's discovery of New York.

This year's Grand Marshal is Michael T. Strianese, former CEO of L3 Technologies, Inc., an aerospace and national security company. Vivian Cardia and Carmine Di Sibio will join him as honorees at the parade. Christopher Loiacono, president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, said, "While celebrating our achievements, we recognize the courage and accomplishments of all immigrant communities that make our city, state, and country great."

The Columbus Citizens Foundation (CCF) is a great way to explore and learn about Italian heritage. In addition to organizing the annual Columbus Day parade, the 95-year-old nonprofit offers cultural and educational programs. Moreover, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the CCF's scholarships to support deserving and talented Italian American students.

Another great path to gaining an appreciation for Italian American contributions, past and present, is the National Organization of Italian American Women (NOIAW). It works to honor, inspire, and support current and future generations. Since 1980, it has been dedicated to uniting, celebrating, enriching, and empowering generations of Italian-American women. Our own President and CEO, Gina Argento, is proud to be a member and supporter of these two organizations.

The annual Columbus Day Parade is always a fantastic event that honors the roots, diversity, and unity of the Italian American community and their importance to the very foundation of America itself. Whether you are of Italian descent or appreciate the rich culture of Italy, make sure to attend on October 14, and when you get there, be sure to tell them Broadway Stages sent you!

Fall Fun at Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm

Fall is finally upon us, and there is plenty to do to celebrate. Our own President and CEO, Gina Argento, recently carved some time out of her busy schedule to visit Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm with her daughter. It is the perfect location to take in the kaleidoscopic view of autumn foliage and enjoy the fall flavors! Apples anyone?

Wilkens Farm has brought joy to area families for over 100 years. While Gina and her daughter spent the afternoon picking (and sampling) some of the farm’s 13 varieties of apples, other families used the occasion to pick peaches, plums, nectarines, pears, and, of course, pumpkins that were ready for harvest. And kids also love to make their way through the farm’s Corn Maze.

But it’s not just about fruit picking. Once you have worked up your appetite, we suggest you stop by the Ice Cream Corner Shoppe for an Apple Cider Donut Sundae or an Apple Cider Float. If you are in the mood for baked goods, the Appleseed Shop offers pies, Struedel Sticks, and the farm’s famous Apple Cider donuts. You can also get more staple lunch items such as hotdogs, popcorn, and bottled water. The Country Market on the upper floor of the Red Barn sells souvenirs, country-themed gifts and local crafts, including Christmas ornaments, gift baskets, scarecrows, and apple kitchen products.

Finally, if you thirst for something a bit more adult than apple cider, check out the farm’s vineyard, White Hill Vineyard, that is open on the weekend. The blend of old and new makes the tasting room a cozy place to enjoy wine and mingle with family and friends.

As Gina can tell you, fall at Wilkens Farm is a great place to make fun, lasting memories. For those who like to plan ahead, Wilkens Farm also sells Christmas trees. Fraser Fir trees are available for Choose-n-Cut in their fields, and pre-cut Fraser Fir trees are also available. They also have a limited number of Douglas Fir trees available this season. Due to high demand, anyone looking to purchase a tree between Saturday, November 30, and Sunday, December 1, must make a reservation. If interested, click here to add your information to the contact list.

Plan your visit today. The farm is open Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can check them out on Instagram and Facebook to follow the fun and be updated on what is fresh and happening! We encourage you to visit Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm. And when you do, tell them Broadway Stages sent you!

Inside Broadway Stages | What's Filming

October is here, which means your favorite shows are returning this month! We will finally get to see the results of months of hard work both behind and in front of the camera. We are sad that the sun will be setting on some programs this season but excited to see other productions expand their offerings. Read on to find out more about what's happening at our facilities.

"Blue Bloods" Returning for Final Eight Episodes

On Friday, October 18, "Blue Bloods" will return with the second half of its 14th and final season at its usual timeslot, 10 p.m. Broadway Stages has been there for every Sunday dinner with the Reagan family since 2010, and we will miss the entire cast and crew immensely.

Before they say goodbye, some of the cast and crew will participate in a panel at PaleyFest on Thursday, October 17. Audiences will get an advanced screening of a new episode, then Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray, Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, and showrunner and executive producer Kevin Wade will discuss their time on the show.

When we last saw the Reagans in May's mid-season finale, Eddie (Ray) and Jamie (Estes) were celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary. Danny (Wahlberg) and Gormley (Robert Clohessy) were tracking rogue Detective Gus Vanderlip (Aidan Quinn) as he attempted to take justice into his own hands after a rapist he arrested was let off on a technicality.

Saying goodbye is always tough, but we are so proud of the cast and crew for their success and the positive impact that the show has had on New York City's film and television industry, as well as its overall economy. The popular police procedural created 80,000 jobs and generated more than $1 billion in spending across the state over the course of its 14-year run.

If you need to catch up before "Blue Bloods" returns, you can watch all episodes on Paramount+. Best of luck to the cast and crew as they begin new adventures!

"Elsbeth" Announces More Guest Stars for Season Two

Last month we reported that Nathan Lane will be the first guest star on the second season of CBS's hit series "Elsbeth." Lane appeared in multiple episodes of "The Good Wife," the series that launched spin-offs "The Good Fight" and "Elsbeth," as lawyer and accountant Clarke Hayden. In the October 17 premiere, he will take on a very different role – obsessive opera fan (and potential murder suspect?) Phillip Cross.

"Elsbeth" is a case-of-the-week whodunit starring Carrie Preston as the quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni who is helping the NYPD solve crimes. Because the 10-episode first season was so popular with both critics and viewers, the second season will include twice as many episodes, which means tons of new guest stars.

Among those reported to appear in the new season are singer and actress Vanessa Williams ("Girls5eva"), Pamela Adlon ("King of the Hill"), Rob Riggle ("The Daily Show"), Brittany O'Grady ("The White Lotus"), and Daniel Davis ("The Nanny"). Additionally, the series will have its first Christmas episode featuring Vanessa Bayer ("Saturday Night Live") and Dan Bucatinsky ("Scandal").

If you need to catch up before the new episodes arrive, check out the first season on Paramount+.

"FBI" Cast and Crew Shakeup Ahead of Season Seven

Katherine Renee Kane has portrayed Special Agent Tiffany Wallace on CBS's "FBI" since the third season of the police procedural, but her story is coming to an end as the actress prepares to leave the series. She is expected to appear in at least one episode of the upcoming season, which premieres on Tuesday, October 15, at 8 p.m. followed by "FBI: Most Wanted" at 9 p.m.

Her replacement will be a Behavioral Analysis Unit agent named Syd played by Lisette Olivera ("National Treasure: Edge of History").

When we last saw the agents at the end of season six, Maggie (Missy Peregrym) and Scola (John Boyd) were separately focused on balancing their professional lives with their new roles as guardians and parents. Wallace found solace after tracking down and killing the terrorist who murdered Special Agent Trevor Hobbs (Roshawn Franklin).

There will be more changes behind the scenes at "FBI" in the coming season. Mike Weiss will replace longtime showrunner and executive producer Rick Eid. Weiss is known for creating the Hulu drama "Death and Other Details" and penning episodes of "Stumptown," "Code Black," "Chicago P.D.," and "The Mentalist."

"Law & Order" and "Organized Crime" Cast Updates

The 24th season of "Law & Order" premiered earlier this week on NBC, without Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon but with the addition of Maura Tierney as Lieutenant Jessica Brady. Brady surprised detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) as Dixon's replacement at a crime scene in the October 3 premiere.

In other franchise news, "Organized Crime" is moving from NBC to Peacock and adding several regulars to appear alongside Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) in its fifth season. Last season, Dean Norris ("Breaking Bad") was introduced as Stabler's estranged older brother Randall. In the upcoming season, he will be a series regular, suggesting that the two siblings have reconciled their differences.

Another addition to the cast is Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio ("Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"), who will recur as Isabella Spezzano, a woman from Stabler's past. Mastrantonio previously played NYPD Captain Zoe Callas in the ninth season of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

We do not know when the new season will launch on Peacock, but Meloni has suggested that Mariska Hargitay will make an appearance as Stabler's longtime "SVU" partner Olivia Benson. We can't wait for the reunion!

HBO Picks Up "The Chair Company" After Successful Pilot

"The Chair Company," the latest project from Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, has been picked up for a full season. We provided ancillary space for the pilot episode of the HBO comedy series and facilitated filming of the pilot in Queens at the Bulova Corporate Center that was once the Bulova Watch Company headquarters and manufacturing facility.

Robinson and Kanin met as writers at "Saturday Night Live" then went on to create Netflix's sketch comedy series "I Think You Should Leave" and Comedy Central's sitcom "Detroiters." The duo's new show will star Robinson as a man who suffers an embarrassing incident at work that leads him to investigate a far-reaching conspiracy.

Other series regulars will include Lake Bell ("Childrens Hospital"), Sophia Lillis ("It"), Will Price ("Goosebumps"), and Joseph Tudisco ("Law & Order"). Lou Diamond Phillips ("La Bamba") guest stars in the pilot episode.

Cast of "Goosebumps" Appearing at New York Comic Con

On Sunday, October 20, cast members and executive producers of the spooky Disney+ anthology series "Goosebumps" will appear in a panel on the main stage at New York Comic Con to offer a sneak peek at what is to come in season two.

Panelists will include executive producers Hilary Winston and Rob Letterman and cast members David Schwimmer ("Friends"), Ana Ortiz ("Ugly Betty"), Sam McCarthy ("Dead to Me"), Jayden Bartels ("Side Hustle"), Elijah Cooper ("9-1-1"), Galilea La Salvia ("Talia in the Kitchen"), Francesca Noel ("R#J"), and Stony Blyden ("How I Met Your Father").

In the new season, Schwimmer will play a recently divorced father of twin teenagers who uncover a dark secret related to the mysterious disappearance of a group of teenagers in 1994. Ortiz will play a police detective with a tragic past.

Disney+ has not announced a date for the series to return, but we will let you know once we find out more.

Spotlight | Michael’s of Brooklyn

Welcome to Broadway Stages' Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants, organizations, individuals, and venues. October is Italian American Heritage Month. Join Broadway Stages in honoring Italian Americans' values, culture, and contributions during this observance! This week, we visit Michael's of Brooklyn in the Marine Park neighborhood of Brooklyn!

Michael Cacace started Michael's of Brooklyn (MoB) as a small pizzeria in 1964. But good things don't just last. They grow. Today, MoB occupies an entire city block in the Marine Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. And it is still in the Cacace family. From the second generation, Fred Cacace runs the front of the house with his son, Michael. John, Fred's brother, helms the kitchen, but don't be surprised if you find him in the dining room chatting with customers.

“Trendy” is not a word you would use to describe MoB. Instead, they buck the trend to change with the times. The most commonly used word to describe MoB is “classy.” The dining room is illuminated by chandelier light and bedecked with wood paneling. It's an ample space with white tablecloths and servers in suits or uniforms. And to top the old-school experience off, a pianist accompanies your dinner.

The experience and atmosphere are remarkable, but the food keeps people coming. Generational recipes, lovingly handed down through the family, are used to craft inspired recipes. Are you a seafood lover? You'll have a hard time picking from their menu. Should you go with the veal scaloppini in a white wine sauce with tons of shrimp? But there's also the Lobster fried alla Michaels with shrimp that everyone raves about. Maybe you want to try the Rigatoni Vodka Baked N' Burnt (rigatoni with sausage and ricotta). But then you'll miss out on the braised rabbit cacciatore. Perhaps you should plan a few visits!

MoB's signature dish, the Veal Smash Job, should not be missed. The breaded-and-fried chop is topped with melty mozzarella and a sauce made from heirloom tomatoes, onions, and prosciutto. Whatever you choose, from delicious warm and cold antipasti and tantalizing pasta creations…to delectable seafood, veal, and poultry entrees, it will come with authentic touches like handmade mozzarella and meat that's butchered in-house.

Many customers rave about MoB's sauce. Some prefer the marinara sauce, a bright, fruity acidity, and plenty of garlic-imbued bits of tomato and peppery olive oil, and others the puttanesca made with olives, anchovies, and capers. So, obeying the laws of supply and demand, MoB listened. In addition to the restaurant, they are purveyors of sauce under the Michael's of Brooklyn brand. 87th Annual Pulaski Day Parade |October 6

October is Polish American Heritage Month, and the occasion will kick off with the 87th annual General Casimir Pulaski Memorial Parade. First held in 1937, the Pulaski Parade is the oldest ethnic parade in New York City. On Sunday, October 6, the parade will traverse Fifth Avenue, starting at 35th at 12 p.m., and from there, passing the New York Public Library, Rockefeller Center, and Saint Patrick's Cathedral on its way to its terminus at 54th Street.

In addition to serving as a celebration of all the contributions Polish Americans have made to our city and country, the event is a memorial to General Casimir Pulaski. Pulaski valiantly defended his homeland of Poland and fought bravely to help forge our country as well.

After hearing of Pulaski's battlefield prowess, Benjamin Franklin invited him to come to our aid in 1777. Pulaski became a general in the Continental Army, creating the Pulaski Cavalry Legion. Moreover, he reformed the American cavalry, earning him the moniker "Father of the American Cavalry."

In 1779, he was mortally wounded by British forces at the Siege of Savannah. Soon after, he succumbed to his injuries. He was only 32 years old. His service to the cause of freedom gives meaning to this year's parade theme, "For Freedom Is Measured by Crosses."

The Grand Marshal of this year's parade is the Honorable Piotr Praszkowicz. Born in Poland in 1970, Praszkowicz immigrated to the United States in 1991. He has prospered in various business ventures, including his contracting company, PDP Contracting, which he has been running since 1997. He is also active with several of Polonia's charities and foundations. He is a proud member of the Pulaski Association of Business and Professional Men, which sponsors the Pulaski Day Parade.

Centered in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Broadway Stages is reminded daily of the beauty and richness of Polish heritage and culture. And while we love to dig into a plate of kielbasa and pierogies, we know there is much more to celebrate. We look forward to saying dziękuję (thank you) for the generations of contributions Polish Americans have made to our city throughout October, starting with the 87th annual General Casimir Pulaski Memorial Parade on October 6. See you there!
