Production Spotlight | Marvel's "Daredevil: Born Again"

Charlie Cox has returned to the small screen for another turn as Daredevil, AKA Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer by day and a vigilante crime fighter with superhuman senses by night.

Marvel legend Stan Lee and comic book artist Bill Everett introduced the character in April 1964. Five decades later, Cox first donned the red mask to star in Netflix's adaptation of the beloved comic book, simply called "Daredevil." The show premiered in April 2015 and concluded after three seasons, but Cox continued to make occasional appearances as Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), showing up in several episodes of the Disney+ hit "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" and the 2024 miniseries "Echo."

On March 4, the superhero returned in the new Disney+ show "Daredevil: Born Again" with much of the same cast from when Netflix's "Daredevil" last aired in 2018. Another thing that has not changed is its ties to New York City. Both "Daredevil" and "Daredevil: Born Again" include scenes filmed at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility on Staten Island, which is part of our 69-acre waterfront campus that has been redesigned as a full-service production facility.

The first season of "Daredevil: Born Again" will include nine episodes, with Disney+ releasing new ones on Tuesday nights through April 15. An eight-episode second season is now filming and expected to be released in 2026.

The new series continues several years after the Netflix show left off. Murdock has given up crime fighting and is still practicing law alongside his friends Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Franklin "Foggy" Nelson (Elden Henson). Power-hungry former crime boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), AKA Kingpin, is out of prison and running a successful campaign to become the city's next mayor. Other cast members reprising their roles from the Netflix series include Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, AKA Punisher; Wilson Bethel as Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter, AKA Bullseye; Ayelet Zurer as Fisk's wife Vanessa; and Susan Varon as the owner of Josie's Bar.

"Daredevil: Born Again" introduced several new characters and cast members in the first episode released on March 4. Murdock has a new law partner, former Assistant District Attorney Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James), and a potential new love interest in therapist Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva). BB Urich (Genneya Walton), the niece of Ben Urich who Fisk killed in "Daredevil," is introduced as a reporter with her own news show, "The BB Report." Cherry (Clark Johnson) is a recently retired police officer who works as an investigator with Murdock. Sheila Rivera (Zabryna Guevara) is the director of Fisk's mayoral campaign, and Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) and Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini) are two of his closest staffers.

The second episode is dedicated to actor Kamar de los Reyes, who posthumously debuts in the MCU as the crime-fighting vigilante Hector Ayala, AKA White Tiger. Appearing in three episodes, Ayala becomes Murdock's client when he is put on trial for murder after breaking up a fight in the subway.

The show garnered 7.5 million views in its first five days streaming on Disney+ and has been met with positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.

"Daredevil: Born Again" and the original "Daredevil" (2015-2018) are not the only MCU productions that have utilized Broadway Stages' facilities. Netflix's "Iron Fist" (2017-2018), "The Punisher" (2017-2019), "Jessica Jones" (2015-2019), "Luke Cage" (2016-2018), and 2017 miniseries "The Defenders" also include scenes filmed at Broadway Stages.

Matt Corman, Chris Ord, and Dario Scardapane are the masterminds who created the latest incarnation of the Daredevil story, with Scardapane also serving as showrunner. He previously performed double duty as a producer and writer for "The Punisher." Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead serve as lead directors. Both are experienced working within the MCU, having directed episodes of the 2022 "Moon Knight" miniseries and the Disney+ hit "Loki" (2021-2023).
