Industry Organizations | New York Women in Film & Television

As one of the premier studio production companies in New York, Broadway Stages works to meet the growing needs of the film and TV industry by providing soundstages and locations where filming can take place. But we are just one part of the comprehensive network of companies and individuals working to make productions come to life. There are also organizations that serve as bridges between these varied parties, encouraging collaboration and mutual support. In this series, we will take a look at these industry organizations to provide insight into their role in the film and TV industry. This week, we tell you about New York Women in Film & Television and their work championing women in media and entertainment. Our own President & CEO, Gina Argento, is a member of this prestigious organization.

New York Women in Film & Television: Empowering Women in Entertainment

For nearly five decades, New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) has been at the forefront of advocating for gender equity in the entertainment industry. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women in film, television, and digital media, NYWIFT plays a pivotal role in amplifying female voices and creating opportunities for women in all aspects of production. From its early beginnings to its impact on the 97th Academy Awards, NYWIFT continues to shape the future of media.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Innovation

Founded in 1977 by producer and director Lenore DeKoven and Hollywood Reporter bureau chief Morna Murphy Martell, NYWIFT started as a small collective of 25 women who sought to challenge industry norms. Just one year later, the organization had grown to 52 members and became officially incorporated in New York State. Today, NYWIFT boasts nearly 2,500 members, making it an influential advocacy group for women in media.

Throughout its history, NYWIFT has launched groundbreaking initiatives that foster inclusivity and professional development. The organization's programs, including workshops, networking events, mentorships, and funding opportunities, have been instrumental in addressing gender disparities in entertainment. These efforts have not only helped countless women establish careers in Hollywood, television networks, and digital storytelling platforms but also inspires a hopeful future for gender equity in the industry.

Why NYWIFT Matters in the Entertainment Industry

Despite progress in recent years, the film and television industries still face challenges when it comes to gender representation. Women, particularly women of color and those over 40, remain underrepresented in key creative roles such as directing, producing, and screenwriting. NYWIFT bridges the gap by providing the resources, connections, and advocacy needed to break these barriers.

One of the organization's most influential initiatives is The Writers Lab, co-founded with Meryl Streep's support. This program provides mentorship and funding to female screenwriters over 40 and combats ageism and gender bias in Hollywood, ensuring that seasoned female voices have a platform to tell their stories. The program is currently accepting submissions (through March 28), from which 12 writers will be chosen to attend its 10th Anniversary of The Writers Lab retreat, where they will work with accomplished women mentors from the film industry. NYWIFT also offers fiscal sponsorship for independent projects, giving women filmmakers access to funding and distribution resources. These programs help produce groundbreaking content that might not otherwise find its way to the big or small screen. See the NYWIFT website for a full list of resources.

Trailblazing Women: Past and Present Members Making an Impact

NYWIFT has been home to some of the most influential women in entertainment. Meryl Streep, an advocate for gender equity, has played a crucial role in supporting women writers and filmmakers through NYWIFT initiatives. Ava DuVernay, director of "Selma" and "When They See Us," has worked alongside the organization to amplify underrepresented voices in media. Award-winning producer Debra Martin Chase, known for films like "The Princess Diaries" and "Harriet," has also been an active supporter of NYWIFT, mentoring young female filmmakers. Other notable members include Mira Nair, the acclaimed director of "Monsoon Wedding," and Lisa Cortés, whose work in documentary filmmaking continues to shed light on social justice issues.

These powerhouse women, among many others, have used NYWIFT as a platform to elevate their careers while helping the next generation of storytellers navigate the industry.

Nine of its members were involved in key productions, further showcasing the organization's influence on the industry's most prestigious awards.
