Inside Broadway Stages | What's Filming
/While the ongoing writer's strike is delaying many productions, we are excited to announce that projects filmed at Broadway Stages facilities before the strike, will soon come to a screen near you. Here are a few updates on some of the shows and films that call Broadway Stages home.
Comedian Marc Maron Joins Melissa McCarthy in "Bernard and the Genie" Remake
When most people think of Richard Curtis Christmas films, 2003's "Love Actually" typically springs to mind. But more than a decade earlier, the British filmmaker wrote the screenplay for the 1991 BBC made-for-TV film "Bernard and the Genie." The holiday film stars Alan Cumming as Bernard, a workaholic art dealer who befriends a genie played by Lenny Henry. Rowan Atkinson co-stars as Bernard's greedy, unscrupulous boss.
In an upcoming remake set in New York City, Melissa McCarthy will star as the titular genie, and British actor Paapa Essiedu will co-star as Bernard. Comedian and podcaster Marc Maron has joined the cast in a yet-to-be-revealed role. A release date and official film title have not been announced just yet, but we do know that it will stream on Peacock when the time comes for its release.
McCarthy can currently be seen on the big screen playing the villainous sea witch Ursula in the live action remake of Disney's "The Little Mermaid." Maron recently starred in his own HBO comedy special "From Bleak to Dark" and voiced Lex Luthor in last year's animated hit "DC League of Super-Pets." Essiedu earned an Emmy nomination for his role in "I May Destroy You" and is set to appear in an upcoming episode of the rebooted series "Black Mirror."
"Billions" Adds to Cast for Upcoming Season
Babak Tafti will join "Billions" in a recurring guest role when the series returns to Showtime for its seventh season. Tafti recently co-starred in Showtime's "Super Pumped," an anthology series from the creators of "Billions" that centered its first season on the battle to lead Uber. Tafti also appeared in season two of HBO's "Succession" as the wealthy businessman Eduard Asgarov. He will play the powerful political consultant Bradford Luke in the upcoming season of "Billions."
As we reported in March, Damian Lewis will also return to the show as the shrewd billionaire hedge fund manager Bobby "Axe" Axelrod. At the end of the fifth season, Axe went on the run, leaving the sixth season to center on Corey Stoll's Mike Prince and Paul Giamatti's Chuck Rhoades.
Broadway Stages facilities have been home to "Billions" for its entire run, and we can't wait for the seventh season. We do not know the exact return date yet, but we do know that there will be 12 episodes.
Trailer Drops for CBS Fall Comedy "Elsbeth"
Broadway Stages has been home to every season of "The Good Fight" and "The Good Wife," and we are excited to welcome the latest spinoff "Elsbeth" to the Broadway Stages family.
The upcoming series will star Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, a character she also portrayed on both "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight." For her appearances on "The Good Wife," Preston earned two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, winning once in 2013.
Elsbeth is a seemingly ditzy yet brilliant attorney who relocates from Chicago to New York, where she works with the NYPD to help solve crimes. Wendell Pierce will co-star as Captain C.W. Wagner, and Carra Patterson will portray officer Kaya Blanke. Pierce is well-known for portraying Detective Bunk Moreland in HBO's "The Wire," while Patterson co-starred on the short-lived Disney+ series "Turner & Hooch."
Robert and Michelle King, who created "The Good Fight," "The Good Wife," and "Evil" (all filmed at our facilities) have written the pilot that will premiere this fall. We are so excited to see this fan favorite return in her very own show.
Jennifer Lawrence Promotes New Film "No Hard Feelings" at CinemaCon
As we previously reported, the upcoming R-rated comedy "No Hard Feelings" starring Jennifer Lawrence includes scenes filmed at our facilities. In the film (opening on June 23), Lawrence plays Maddie, a woman who responds to a Craigslist ad posted by a desperate mother (Laura Benanti) who wants her reserved, socially isolated teenage son (Andrew Barth Feldman) to go on a date before he leaves for college. Matthew Broderick, Hasan Minhaj, Natalie Morales, Scott MacArthur, Kyle Mooney, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach round out the cast.
Lawrence recently appeared alongside director and co-writer Gene Stupnitsky at Las Vegas's CinemaCon, an annual movie theater trade show, where they debuted an exclusive clip from the film to laughs and applause. A new trailer was also recently released in anticipation of the film.
Stupnitsky co-wrote and directed 2019's raunchy R-rated "Good Boys" and co-wrote 2011's "Bad Teacher." He also spent several seasons as a writer and director on NBC's "The Office." Word has it that this film is hilarious and cannot be missed!
