Angela Bassett Wins Entertainer of the Year at the NAACP Image Awards
/Angela Bassett's magical awards season continued this weekend, as the star of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" picked up the top prize at the 54th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday. She beat out fellow nominees Mary J. Blige, Quinta Brunson, Viola Davis, and Zendaya to win Entertainer of the Year. But that wasn't it for Bassett. She won two additional major awards on Saturday — Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for Fox's "9-1-1" and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for "Wakanda Forever."
The NAACP Image Awards, presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, honor the year's top performers in film, television, theater, music, and literature. "Wakanda Forever" was the night's big winner, recognized in multiple categories including Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Tenoch Huerta, and Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture for Ryan Coogler.
In the leading actor categories, Viola Davis reigned supreme, winning Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for "The Woman King." Will Smith won Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for "Emancipation."
On the television side, Starz's "P-Valley" dominated the drama categories, while ABC's "Abbott Elementary" ruled over the comedy fields. "P-Valley" is an adaptation of Katori Hall's play "Pussy Valley," and follows workers at a strip club in the Mississippi Delta. The show won Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Nicco Annan, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Loretta Devine. Cliff Smith was named Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Starz's "Power Book II: Ghost."
"Abbott Elementary" took home awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for Quinta Brunson, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Janelle James, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Tyler James Williams. Cedric the Entertainer was named Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for CBS's "The Neighborhood."
