ICYMI – Deadline Hollywood Interview with MOME
/In late 2022, Deadline Hollywood interviewed the Commissioner of New York City’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), Anne del Castillo, and the recently appointed Deputy of Film Amoaku Kwame, to talk about the recovery of the city’s creative industry, the positive economic impact the film and television industry continues to provide the city, and why it’s at the center of the Mayor’s Economic Recovery Blueprint. Included below are a few highlights.
To understand the full impact of the creative industry you need to know what is included in the MOME portfolio. In addition to film and television, it encompasses theater, music, publishing, digital media, workforce development in the creative industries, press credentials, and the Office of Nightlife. That’s a lot in a city like New York! The road to recovery from the 2020 impact of COVID-19 has been challenging but there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
At the end of 2022, the film and television industry is at about 75% of 2019 numbers and poised to decisively play its role in fueling NYCs economic engine; a role that also brings mutual gains to tourism, and helps generate jobs and revenue to locals, the city, and state. In addition, the New York state tax credit programs have been instrumental for industry growth and remain key to attracting industry activity to New York City.
Among the initiatives that are helping to drive the industry’s recovery, is the creation of the first-ever 21-member Film and Television Council that is part of the Mayor’s Economic Recovery Blueprint. In addition, the industry is now represented in each of the city’s agencies and prepared to deliver – creatively and economically.
