"New Amsterdam" Returning for 5th and Final Season on September 20

Over the last four seasons, the NBC medical drama "New Amsterdam" has tackled the COVID-19 pandemic, a hurricane, and other major disasters as Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) and his staff have treated patients at one of the country's oldest public hospitals. Sadly, the show will wrap up with a 13-episode final season airing this fall. And, it will do so without one of its main stars.

Freema Agyeman has played Dr. Helen Sharpe, Dr. Goodwin's love interest, since the beginning of the series, but the actress will not be returning for the final season. In the season four finale, Dr. Sharpe broke off their wedding, and it would appear that this is truly the end for the couple.

While Dr. Sharpe seemingly will not return, the hospital's Chief of Oncology, Dr. Elizabeth Wilder, should be getting more airtime, as actress Sandra Mae Frank has been promoted from a recurring role to a regular for the final season.

Other relationship questions that will hopefully be addressed in the show's final season: Can Iggy (Tyler Labine) and Martin (Mike Doyle) save their marriage? Can Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) get answers from his father? Can Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) and Leyla (Shiva Kalaiselvan) work things out, or is this the end?

Inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer's memoir "Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital," "New Amsterdam" centers on a medical director seeking to improve patient care by cutting through the red tape that often stands in his way. "New Amsterdam" has been filmed at our Brooklyn-based facilities for all of its five seasons, and we are sad to see it end. We wish the cast and crew the best of luck and hope to work with them again soon!

Tune in to NBC on Tuesday, September 20, for the final season premiere.
