Inaugural Broadway Stages’ Arts Award

Sabrina Barrios, a New York-based installation artist from Brazil, has been announced as the winner of the inaugural Broadway Stages’ Arts Residency Award. Sabrina will receive a commission for Rise of the Missing Planet, a site-specific installation at Kingsland Wildflowers atop one of our soundstages in Brooklyn. It will be featured throughout the NOoSPHERE Arts’ 2022 WE ARE NATURE season.

This art installation, part of a trilogy series, is inspired by the Brazilian new-concrete movement of the ’60s, its ideals, and explorations. Using string, wire, UV light, Styrofoam, gesso, and acrylic, Sabrina tells the story of Tiamat, a Sumerian goddess. The focus of the work is Connection and Ascension.

The artist said, “In this three-part site-specific art installation, the work brings forward the story of Tiamat, the Goddess of Creation for the Matriarchy, the Goddess of Chaos for the Patriarchy…Until this day, when we look at ancient cosmology (such as Sumerian), we see they knew of a planet we haven’t heard of; and wonder about its fate.”

The first component of the trilogy was Tiamat Built in a Tent presented in Finland in 2017. The story’s second installment was Tiamat Built over a River. Sabrina showcased this work in Brazil in 2019.

There were many strong contenders among the hundreds of entries from over 50 countries. As a result, in addition to Broadway Stages’ Arts Award, a second award for artists based in NYC was created, the NOoSPHERE Arts’ Residency Award. The winner of this award, Faith XLVII, a multidisciplinary street artist from South Africa, will spend a month on board Mothership NYC in 2023.
