SPOTLIGHT: New York City Audubon | Manhattan

Welcome to Broadway Stages’ Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants, organizations, individuals, and venues. We encourage our readers to join us in supporting these stakeholders who help to advance local economic, social and environmental growth.

This week, in the spirit of Earth Month, we turn our attention to the fauna of our beautiful city and an organization that has devoted itself to the preservation of our feathered flying friends, the New York City Audubon.

For over 40 years, the NYC Audubon has devoted itself to the preservation of more than 300 species of birds that call our city home. Through a combination of engaging and entertaining programs and innovative conservation campaigns, NYC Audubon has worked tirelessly to protect the vast variety of birds living in the 30,000 acres of wetlands, forests, and grasslands of New York City. A few of the pograms are listed below.

CONSERVATION

  • Project Safe Flight – Helping birds migrate safely through New York City and protecting the ancient cycle of migration, from songbirds and raptors to hummingbirds and shorebirds.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

  • Feathered Friends – An after-school birding club for elementary schools that leads students on a journey of nature discovery and appreciation.

  • Governor’s Island Residency – Learn about and watch for over 220 species of birds on a 172-acre island in New York Harbor.

ADVOCACY

  • Avian Advocates – With a variety of tools, advocacy volunteers help to protect, enhance, and create the habitat needed for the over 300 species of birds that call NYC home.

While NYC Audubon has made great strides, our city’s bird population continues to struggle with loss of habitat, food sources, and more. Broadway Stages is proud to support the efforts of this wonderful organization and honored to be joining the NYC Audubon board this year. We encourage you to engage in the movement to protect our feathered flying friends. Consider donating, rescuing a bird, or even joining the team. Head over to their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages to keep up with the day-to-day of NYC Audubon, and check out upcoming events and other opportunities to get involved. Become a champion of nature! Support the NYC Audubon, and be sure to tell them that Broadway Stages sent you!
