February is Black History Month
/February marks Black History Month, a time when we honor and focus on the achievements, contributions, and history of African Americans. There are many exciting Black History Month events planned for the NYC area this year and we have highlighted a few for your consideration.
The New York Public Library has events planned for all ages, many are online. Comic books fans won’t want to miss the exhibition, “Boundless: 10 Years of Seeding Black Comic Futures” that “celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture’s ‘Black Comic Book Festival,’ through photographs, memorabilia, creator highlights, comic book reading stations, and clips from past festival programs.” And you can rewatch events online from the recent “10th Annual Black Comic Book Festival” that was held January 13 - 15. The Library will also host literature discussions, family storytime events, and more, including “African Americans in Pop Culture! Comics, Shows & Movies,” a discussion of the impact of African American contributions to Pop Culture (Adults, February 17, online). And check out the Wednesday series, “Kids STEAM: African- American Inventors” (Children 5-12 years, Parents/Caregivers, online). See the Library’s schedule for more events, details, and registration information.
NYC Parks will offer Black history-related walks, concerts, and more. These include learning about history during a clean-up at Herbert Von King Park in Brooklyn (February 5), and learning about Queens historic landmarks while walking the Flushing Freedom Mile (February 13). Check out the NYC Parks event calendar for event and registration details.
Film and TV buffs should check out The Paley Center’s “Salute to Black Achievements in Television presented by Citi” (February 5-27), which will include a gallery exhibit showcasing milestones of Black TV and industry figures, plus opportunities to see props and costumes, participate in trivia and arts & crafts, and more. Check the Paley Center’s event page for details and ticket information.
Finally, stay tuned to Broadway Stages during February for our four-part series that remembers legends in film and highlights breakout stars of the last decade, representing the rich diversity of Black culture and history.
