The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH) recently held the grand opening of their newest urban farm that will help expand food access for communities facing food insecurity. Once a vacant lot, TCAH has transformed the property located at 1420 Eastern Parkway into a new urban farm. Over the last six months work was underway to revitalize this property and with the help TCAH’s farm department, volunteers, and Green Teens (youth trained in urban farming), the grand opening was a success!

This agricultural space will add 5,000 square feet of land for urban farming and provide much needed fresh produce for neighbors in Brownsville and beyond. TCAH’s cultivation strategy includes addressing the impact of diet-related diseases like diabetes and hypertension and promote environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture. TCAH strives to use all-natural production methods in line with the principles of organic farming so that they can improve the health of both the land and neighbors.

At the grand opening, Dr. Melony Samuels, TCAH Chief Executive Officer, said, “The Campaign Against Hunger is committed to infusing heart-healthy fruits and vegetables into communities that are far too often overlooked and starved of affordable, nutritious food options. The opening of Eastern Parkway Farm is just the most recent example of our work to advance food justice.”

TCAH has mobilized to meet the needs of the community by improving access to nutritious food and related resources. In the year following March 2020, TCAH provided enough food for 25 million meals — nearly six times the capacity of a typical year. Broadway Stages proudly donated warehouse space to TCAH during the pandemic; the facility served as a food distribution center that enabled them to get food to those in need. Our support continues and we encourage you to join us in helping TCAH end food insecurity.

Please consider a financial, in-kind, or volunteer gift. You can also become an advocate for food justice. And we encourage you to attend one of two upcoming Children’s Harvest Festivals (October 2 @ Saratoga Farm and October 9 @ Far Rock Farm), a free annual event annual event for the whole family, with farm tours, food, arts and crafts, live entertainment, access to public benefits, and more – there is something for everyone!
