Inside Broadway Stages | What's Filming
/Filming has safely resumed in New York City after pandemic-related delays, boosting the local economy and the communities where we live and work. Here is a quick look at some of the amazing productions filming now at our soundstages.
“Billions” (Showtime) Resumes Season Five Filming
Last year, Showtime aired seven episodes of the fifth season of “Billions” before the pandemic suddenly halted production on the remaining five episodes. We are happy to report that production on the popular drama is back, as the cast and crew are currently filming the remaining season five episodes at Broadway Stages. There are also plans for a sixth season after the current season wraps up.
“Billions” follows unscrupulous billionaire hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) as he tries to grow his firm’s wealth and stay ahead of the law, particularly United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti).
When we last saw Bobby in episode seven, he was declaring war on rival investor Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) and attempting to sabotage Wendy’s (Maggie Siff) budding romance with an artist. Meanwhile, Chuck has destroyed the career of Treasury Secretary Todd Krakow (Danny Strong) and is now focusing his attention on getting his father a kidney transplant, through whatever means possible, no matter how unethical.
In other “Billions”-related news, series co-creator Andrew Ross Sorkin is currently developing a movie with HBO about the recent GameStop stock craze that shook up Wall Street.
Season five is rumored to be returning in the fall, and we are thrilled to be a part of it. We will keep you posted!
“Dr. Death” (Peacock) Filming in NYC
A new limited series will tell the true crime story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a former neurosurgeon currently serving a life sentence for maiming and killing multiple patients over a two-year period. The series will be based on the Wondery Media six-episode podcast series also called “Dr. Death.”
Joshua Jackson will star as Duntsch, who was a promising young member of the Dallas medical community before his medical license was revoked in 2013. He will be joined by Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater who play fellow surgeons who tried to stop him from harming more patients. Carrie Preston, of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight,” recently joined the cast as defense attorney Robbie McClung.
The limited series is filming now in New York City following pandemic-related delays that led to the recasting of several key roles. Jamie Dornan was set to play Dr. Duntsch, but he was replaced with Jackson due to scheduling conflicts. Additionally, esteemed British director Stephen Frears was expected to direct the first two episodes of the series. Instead, Maggie Kiley will direct; she will be joined by two other female directors for the remaining episodes – Jennifer Morrison and So Yong Kim.
Peacock has not announced a release date yet, but we will let you know when we have some news.
“Harlem” (Amazon) Adds New Cast Members
Tracy Oliver’s new single-camera half-hour comedy series “Harlem” is filming now, and we have exciting news about the cast. EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg and TV legend Jasmine Guy (“A Different World”) are set to play recurring roles.
Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”) created, wrote, and is executive producing the show about four black women (played by Meagan Good, Grace Byers, Jerrie Johnson, Shoniqua Shandai) navigating their love lives, sex lives, and careers. “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee is directing the first two episodes of the upcoming series, and Amy Poehler will also serve as an executive producer.
“Younger" (Paramount+) Switching Networks for Final Season
“Younger,” TV Land’s longest running original series, is currently filming its seventh and final season in New York City. When the show returns, it will be on the Paramount+ subscription on-demand network (formerly called CBS All Access).
“Younger” centers on Liza Miller (Sutton Foster), a 40-year-old divorced mother who lies about her age in order to land a job with a publishing company. Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar, Miriam Shor, and Nico Tortorella co-star in the Darren Star (“Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Melrose Place,” and “Sex and the City”) production, which is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Pamela Redmond Satran.
Season six wrapped up in September 2019, and fans have been waiting patiently for updates on when the show will return. While we do not know the exact date, we can report that there will be 12 episodes – hopefully enough to tie up loose ends for Liza, Maggie, Kelsey, Diana, Josh, and all of your other favorite characters.
“Younger” Final Season Sneak Peek
Cast Additions and Departures in “The Good Fight” (Paramount+)
When Christine Baranski returns as Diane Lockhart in season five of “The Good Fight,” she will be without two of her castmates. Cush Jumbo (Lucca Quinn) and Delroy Lindo (Adrian Boseman) are both leaving the show.
In better news, the legendary Mandy Patinkin will be joining the cast this upcoming season as Hal Wackner, a man with no legal training who opens a court in the back of a shop. Patinkin spent eight seasons portraying Saul Berenson in the popular Showtime series “Homeland.”
Also joining the cast for its fifth season is Charmaine Bingwa, who will play young lawyer Carmen Moyo. Amy Aquino of Amazon’s “Bosch” will return as Stella Corben, a character introduced in the final episode of season four, “The Gang Discovers Who Killed Jeffrey Epstein.”
Speaking of season four, when we last saw the team at Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart, they were struggling to stay afloat, leading them to enter a merger with international law firm STR Laurie.
As fans know, the show is no stranger to tackling today’s headlines, with plotlines centering on #MeToo and systemic inequalities in the justice system, and we expect that to continue in season five. From the pandemic, and the Black Lives Matter movement, to the election and its violent aftermath, there is a lot they can work with. We can’t wait to see what happens next and how it all plays out!
