Celebrating the Arts | Marc Harary — Architectural Photographer

The New York City area is full of talented artists whose work reflects the diverse and rich communities, ideas, and lives around us. Broadway Stages is committed to promoting these individuals and their talents so a wider audience can enjoy their creativity and passion. In this post, we feature Marc Harary, a NYC-area architectural photographer.

To be in New York City is to be amid myriad buildings and structures — many are old, they might be weathered and past-their-prime or restored to show forth elements of their original grandeur or purpose. Many are shiny and new or in the process of being built, staking their claim as residents of this great city. One photographer documenting these structures is Marc Harary. A Registered Architect, Harary established City Architectural Photography, LLC in 2013 to work with architectural and construction professionals and building owners to visually record their projects and structures. This has included both new construction and historic restoration, with both interior and exterior shots, including residential, commercial, educational, and even the Broadway Stages film and TV studios, locations and green rooftop infrastructure! His photos reveal an architectural perspective that comes from his specialized background and experience.

Harary has an educational background in architecture, construction, and civil engineering, plus more than 30 years working in architecture and construction fields. Growing up just outside of New York City, in New Rochelle, New York, Harary attended undergraduate school at Columbia University. It was there, he says, “where exposure to the architecture of New York City became instrumental in my path to becoming an architect and an architectural photographer.” This architecture, combined with the city’s diverse, vibrant residents, continues to fascinate him. Harary says, “I especially appreciate the juxtaposition of a backdrop of dense, history-making architecture overlaid with the spontaneous, present-day experience of seeing tons of people from all over the world inhabiting this urban stage set. Walking anywhere in the city and taking photos is probably one of the most interesting things to do that I can think of.”

Harary approaches each project in a highly collaborative way, working closely with clients to discover their needs, and using his skills and experience to capture the right lighting, color, and angles. He engages clients in the final photo selection to ensure customers are satisfied with the end product. This often results in photos that are not only fit for purpose for the specific project, but also can serve as pieces of art in their own right. His excitement about the field of architecture shines through his photos: “I see beauty and interest everywhere I look in the built environment...I am passionate about sharing that personal vision of artistic insight with the wider world,” he says.

Harary also uses his architecture, construction, and photography skills to help his local community. He contributed photography services to the Hudson Park Greenhouse to help with fundraising efforts for a greenhouse and activities program for the New Rochelle community. Additionally, he serves as president and has worked on photography projects for Interfaith Dwelling Corporation, a non-profit in New Rochelle that constructs and maintains low-income housing for seniors.
