Awards Season Is Finally Underway

With last week’s announcement of the Critics’ Choice Awards nominees, the awards season is in full swing. This season is atypical due to the lingering effects of industry shutdowns and delayed theatrical releases resulting from the pandemic. While some dates are still in the air, here is what we know right now. Of special note is that the Tony Awards will not take place until Broadway is able to safely return. Be sure to mark your calendar for this year’s awards ceremonies!

Critics’ Choice Awards nominees:

On February 3, the Golden Globe nominations will be announced, with the 78th annual ceremony scheduled for Sunday, February 28. The event is scheduled to be held in-person at the Beverly Hilton, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting, and it will air on NBC. The eligibility rules changed this year to accommodate films released (or scheduled to be released either theatrically or streaming) through February 28, 2021. Television programs are still subject to the December 31, 2020 awards eligibility year-end date, so programs released in 2021 will be eligible for the 2022 Golden Globes.

On February 4, this year’s nominees for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards will be announced, with the ceremony scheduled to take place Sunday, April 4. The awards will be presented in an hour-long special broadcast on TNT and TBS.

On March 7, the Critics’ Choice Awards will be held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and will be broadcast live on The CW network. We can’t wait to see how our nominated productions, including “The Flight Attendant” and “The Good Fight,” fare.

Nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards will be announced February 28, with the event scheduled to take place Sunday April 25, 2021 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The ceremony is typically held in February or March honoring films released theatrically between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year. However, this year the Academy will honor films released between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021. This is the first time since the 6th annual Academy Awards that films released in different years can be eligible in the same award year. Typically, a film must be released in at least one cinema in Los Angeles County for a minimum of seven days with three screenings per-day in order to be eligible for a nomination. However, that rule changed this year as well.

On July 13, nominations will be announced for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. Current plans for the ceremony are not set in stone, but there will likely be a virtual ceremony held in September.
