/What is THE place to get up to the minute information about what is going on in Greenpoint? Just go to www.greenpointers.com and you can read about everything that’s happening in our slice of Brooklyn. From events, food, drink, culture, art, music and community affairs, Greenpointers.com is your one-stop-shop to be in the know. And with the City beginning to openup, now is the time to check them out if you are not already an avid follower. At a time when many local media outlets are disappearing, Greenpointers has emerged as a reliable news source for local residents and businesses.
Started in 2007 by Justine Carroll as a neighborhood blog, the strong foundation and following she built was taken a step further when Jennifer Galatioto purchased the website in 2011. In 2012, she updated the website, pulled in local contributors from a variety of backgrounds, launched the popular Greenpointers markets featuring independent artisans, and established Greenpointers as a respected cultural brand and hub for happenings in the neighborhood. In 2014, Jen moved to the west coast and sold Greenpointers to local resident Julia Moak. Julia came to Greenpointers with 10+ years of experience in product development and design, as well as a ton of energy to continue the momentum her predecessors started. Since then, Greenpointers has grown its audience by up to 10x across various platforms, firmly established itself as a trusted hyperlocal news source, and a central hub for delivering information and initiating important conversations in our community.
With the onset of COVID-19, Greenpointers, like other businesses in our City, saw its revenue cut-off as it had to cancel events and local small businesses struggled to stay open. But Greenpointers response has been true to form, with increased coverage and regular updates for the community on changes, closures, new operating hours, re-openings and more, at no cost to our local businesses. With the help of grants, Greenpointers has been able to remain in operation and hire a talented team of journalists. As a result, it has had a huge impact on the local community, and far-reaching impact through stories that went on to become viral in the national and international news landscape.
Looking forward, Greenpointers’ Publisher Julia is working hard to update the website and develop a solution to sustain Greenpointers and hyperlocal media in the future. But this can’t be done without the support of the community.
