Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center Opens
/It’s been years in the making but the wait is over. On Tuesday, October 20 the new Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center opened, albeit for limited lobby service due to COVID-19. The new facility will serve as a full-service library and a community hub for environmental awareness, activism and education. Funded by a $5 million grant from the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund, $1.8 million from the NY State Education Department, and over $14 million in Library and City capital funding, the new Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center is the result of community collaboration with Brooklyn Public Library and project architect Marble Fairbanks. At 15,000 square feet, the new Library is double the size of the previous building and provides significant indoor and outdoor spaces for expanded activities related to the exploration of the environment as well as everyday library use. The design offers an engaging space that exceeds LEED Gold certification standards. A gardened reading deck, windows that act as sun dials, a cistern to collect rainwater and sustainable green roof are just some of the key green features.
