The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards did not disappoint and we are thrilled that actors from two series shot at our Staten Island location were recognized for their talents.

Jharrel Jerome won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his work in Ava DuVernay's powerful four-part miniseries "When They See Us." The series about the Central Park Five (now known as the Exonerated Five) also won for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special. Jerome portrayed Korey Wise, who spent 12 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. Jerome received a standing ovation as he thanked the five men who were in attendance at the awards ceremony.

The show's creators spent weeks filming inside Staten Island's shuttered Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, Broadway Stages’ campus in Charleston on the Island’s south shore.  Jerome told AM New York that the authentic prison setting helped him get into character. Eight different members of the cast were nominated for acting awards. Congratulations to the cast and crew for all of their success!

We were also so happy to see Billy Porter make history by winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on "Pose." The second season of FX's groundbreaking drama that explores the New York City ballroom culture of the late '80s and early '90s wrapped up last month.

The cast of "Pose" includes five transgender actresses of color as well as several openly gay male actors, and last night Porter became the first openly gay black man to win in this category. Congratulations to Billy Porter and the rest of the cast and crew! We cannot wait for season three to start filming!

To all the nominees and winners of last night’s Emmy Awards, Broadway Stages congratulates you!
