Productions Filmed at Broadway Stages Win Big at the New York-Based Gotham Awards

The Gotham Independent Film Awards recognize the best indie movies and television programs of the year, and some of the top winners have ties to Broadway Stages.

Ava DuVernay's groundbreaking miniseries "When They See Us" was named Best Breakthrough Series – Long Form. The show's creators spent weeks filming inside Staten Island's shuttered Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, Broadway Stages' campus in Charleston on the Island's south shore. Star Jharrel Jerome told AM New York that the authentic prison setting helped him get into character. "When They See Us" was also a big winner at the Emmys earlier this year, winning several awards and garnering 16 nominations.

Another big winner was Awkwafina, who won for Best Actress for her performance in "The Farewell." Next month Awkwafina will be starring in the autobiographical comedy series "Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens," which was filmed at Broadway Stages’ studios and will premiere on January 22, 2020 on Comedy Central. We cannot wait to see her and our studio on the small screen.

The other major winner was Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story," a Netflix production set in New York City. The film won Best Feature, Screenplay, Actor (Adam Driver), and the coveted Audience Award. Click here for a complete list of winners.
