Queens Proud | Murrays Cheese Bar and Shop

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Broadway Stages. In celebration of our 40th trip around the sun, we are shining the spotlight on the heart of our community – the local businesses that provide the essential or simply enjoyable goods and services that allow us to thrive and delight in this great city we call home. We continue our series in the borough where it all began, Queens, and feature the local shops that line our streets, providing our neighbors, family, and friends a livelihood. Join us on our journey and get to know the people and businesses that make our community home. Today, we take a seat at the bar, Murray’s Cheese Bar, in Long Island City!

What started as a small operation in 1940 has grown into one of the biggest names in cheese in all of NYC. Today, their products can be found at over 800 grocery stores and over 600 restaurants nationwide. They have three Cheese Shops in the city – Greenwich Village, Grand Central Market, and Murray’s Cheese LIC. The first of its kind from Murray’s, their main location in LIC features a Cheese Bar restaurant and an adjacent Cheese Shop – truly a one-stop-shop for all things cheese. Yumm!

In addition to the shop in LIC is Murray’s Cheese Bar, located at 28-30 Jackson Avenue in LIC. The bar features cheese boards along with seasonally inspired dishes from Executive Chef Clare Malfitano. Chef Clare expertly highlights cheeses and fresh dairy alongside seasonal produce, carefully sourced meats, and ingredients from Murray’s shop next door. One look at their menu, and you will want to make a reservation (takeout and delivery are also available). The restaurant is open 12 – 9 pm on Monday and Wednesday, 12 — 11 pm on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 11 am – 11 pm  Saturday, and 11 am – 9 pm on Sunday. Be sure to stop by for Happy Hour, 4 – 6 pm Monday through Friday!

Murray’s Cheese Shop is equally impressive! Just steps away from the restaurant, the shop features a rotating selection of 40 cheeses, many plucked from their cheese caves down the street. The self-service cheese shop is intended to help guests feel empowered to explore the cheese case more closely, with highly knowledgeable staff to answer questions.

The Cheese Shop features more than 400 items – everything that you’d put on a cheese plate, prepared foods, smoked fish, dairy, snacks, pasta and sauces, chocolates, olive oil, fresh baguettes, iced coffee, beverages, and more. They even offer classes, private events, and a unique boot camp for the true cheese lover! The shop is open 12 –9 pm Monday through Friday and 11 am – 9 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

You can read about the offerings and sign up on their website. We encourage you to also visit their Instagram and Facebook pages. But we warn you that it may cause an insatiable craving for cheese.

Queens Proud | LeNoble Lumber

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Broadway Stages. In celebration of our 40th trip around the sun, we are shining the spotlight on the heart of our community – the local businesses that provide the essential or simply enjoyable goods and services that allow us to thrive and delight in this great city we call home. We continue our series in the borough where it all began, Queens, and feature the local establishments that line our streets, providing our neighbors, family, and friends a livelihood. Join us on our journey and get to know the people and businesses that make our community home. Today, we take a look at the history of LeNoble Lumber in Long Island City, Queens and their longstanding relationship with New York City’s cinematic industries.

LeNoble Lumber, founded in 1965 by Paul LeNoble, has become a prominent player in the industry, supplying high-quality wood products to diverse clientele. With a focus on sustainability and a strong sense of community, LeNoble Lumber has not only left its mark on the architectural and film industries, but also has made a positive economic impact on the surrounding communities.

During the 1970s, LeNoble Lumber emerged as a favorite supplier to New York's motion picture and television industry. Iconic films such as "The Producers," "Rosemary's Baby," "Midnight Cowboy," "Klute," "The Godfather," and "Dog Day Afternoon" all relied on LeNoble's top-notch set construction materials. Their dedication to quality and service quickly gained them a reputation as a reliable partner for the film industry, solidifying their position as a go-to supplier.

Throughout the 1980s, LeNoble Lumber's reputation for quality products and exceptional service expanded its clientele to include premier museums, department stores, display companies, and commercial contractors across New York City. In 1998, LeNoble joined forces with Maxwell Lumber, another family-owned company, enhancing their B2B reach and venturing into additional industries. This collaboration brought Marc Bernstein, head of Maxwell Lumber and a cousin of the LeNoble family, on board as the Vice President of LeNoble. In 2007, LeNoble Lumber outgrew its Manhattan facilities and moved to a spacious 200,000-square-foot office and distribution center in Long Island City. This move allowed them to serve their expanding customer base more efficiently. In the following years, LeNoble became a major player in the architectural hardwood plywood, fiberboard, and particle board industries. Their dedication to quality led them to develop strategic partnerships with renowned mills like Columbia Forest Products.

LeNoble Lumber stands out from other lumber companies due to its unwavering commitment to sustainability. Recognizing the importance of preserving the world's forests, LeNoble became accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). They promote and sell FSC-certified materials to their customers, ensuring that responsible forest management practices are followed. LeNoble's dedication to sustainability has not only helped conserve forests but has also made a significant impact on the film and television industry, one of the largest consumers of lumber products. The company’s success can be attributed in part to its strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork. The company views its 80+ employees as part of a large, intimate family.

As a significant employer in Long Island City, the company has a positive economic influence on the surrounding communities. By providing stable employment opportunities for over 80 individuals, LeNoble contributes to the local economy, supporting families and creating a ripple effect that benefits nearby businesses. LeNoble’s journey from a small lumberyard to a renowned supplier has been marked by a commitment to quality, sustainability, and community impact. From servicing the film and television industry to expanding its reach in various sectors, LeNoble Lumber’s dedication to customer satisfaction and sustainable practices has set them apart. With their deep-rooted sense of family and their focus on preserving the environment, LeNoble Lumber continues to shape the industry and leave a lasting impression on the communities they serve!

Celebrate Pride Month With LGBTQ+ | Documentaries

Over the last few years, documentarians around the world have produced hundreds of films that tell the true stories of LGBTQ+ people. Some are household names, but most are not. Read on to learn about a few of these films that you can watch this Pride Month.

If you are interested in learning more about the history of the LGBTQ+ community and what it was like to live through the 20th century gay liberation movement, then several films and docuseries should be on your watchlist.

Streaming on Apple TV+ is the 2020 documentary "P.S. Burn This Letter Please," which centers on a box of letters written nearly 60 years ago by a group of New York City drag queens. The filmmakers spent several years tracking down the authors of the letters, who are now in their 80s and 90s, to ask them how they survived and thrived through decades when it was illegal to live as their true selves.

"A Secret Love," streaming on Netflix, is a 2020 documentary that tells the story of two women who secretly lived as lovers for nearly seven decades. Terry Donahue was once a player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League while her partner Pat Henschel ran an interior decorating business. The couple kept their relationship a secret from their families for decades and finally wed on Donahue's 90th birthday.

Another documentary that details the long struggle of LGBTQ+ activists and allies is 2019's "Circus of Books," streaming on Netflix. For decades, a heterosexual, cisgender couple ran Circus of Books, a gay pornography shop in West Hollywood that provided a safe space for LGBTQ+ Los Angelenos in the second half of the 20th century. The couple opened two additional locations, stocking their stores with adult toys, pornography, and of course books, primarily novels by LGBTQ+ writers. This documentary, directed by the couple's daughter, shares their story and the stories of those who frequented their stores for decades.

If you are interested in learning more about the founders of the modern LGBTQ+ movement, then check out 2020's "Equal" streaming on Prime. Actor Billy Porter (star of the FX series "Pose," filmed at Broadway Stages) narrates this four-part docuseries that honors the earliest trailblazers who are not widely recognized for their contributions toward the cause.

If you are more interested in the present than the past, then check out one of the many films and series that explore current struggles faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community around the world.

The 2019 documentary "Changing the Game," streaming on Hulu, tackles a very polarizing topic – transgender athletes in U.S. schools. The film centers on three transgender high school athletes – a skier in New Hampshire, a track star in Connecticut, and the Texas state wrestling champion – living their lives amid adversity and prejudice.

Another documentary that explores transgender American youth is 2020's "Transhood," streaming on Max. Documentarians spent five years filming four kids between the ages of four and 15 and their families to capture the reality of how changing social norms are reshaping everyday families in America's heartland.

In other parts of the world, transgender people face additional struggles with acceptance and basic survival. The 2019 documentary "Indianara," available to watch on Vimeo in Portuguese with English subtitles, tells the story of a Brazilian transgender woman and her friends who are fighting the odds as their nation veers toward totalitarianism.

Another documentary that takes a harsh look at the reality of many LGBTQ+ people around the world is 2020's "Welcome to Chechnya," streaming on Max in Russian with English subtitles. The film centers on activists risking their lives in the Russian republic of Chechnya, where leader Ramzan Kadyrov oversees a government-backed campaign to detain, torture, and execute members of the republic's LGBTQ+ community. The film follows these activists as they work undercover to provide victims with safe houses and visa assistance to escape persecution.

At the 2022 Oscars, "Flee," an animated documentary from Denmark, made history earning nominations for Best International Feature Film (only the second animated film ever nominated), Best Documentary Feature, and Best Animated Feature categories. It is the first film ever to be nominated in all three of those categories. The 2021 film is a tragic yet inspiring look at one man's true story about fleeing Afghanistan as a child refugee and finding love. He reveals his hidden past to his soon-to-be-husband shortly before their wedding. The documentary is streaming on Hulu in Danish with English subtitles.

The 2019 documentary "Queer Japan," streaming on Tubi and Prime in Japanese with English subtitles, is a celebratory look at LGBTQ+ culture. Over the course of three years, documentarians interviewed more than 100 artists, activists, and everyday people living in modern Japan. This documentary celebrates the wide spectrum of Japanese LGBTQ+ culture and shares with viewers the nation's path toward acceptance of queer expression.

If you are interested in learning about LGBTQ+ representation in film and television, then check out 2020's documentary "Disclosure," streaming on Netflix. The film details the history of transgender representation on screen and its effects on people's lives. Actress Laverne Cox (star of the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black," filmed at Broadway Stages) and other transgender filmmakers examine the last century of film and television to show the damage caused by inaccurate portrayals of transgender people. Actresses Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and  Angelica Ross of FX's "Pose" also appear in this documentary.

In 2020, a docuseries examined the broader history of the American LGBTQ+ movement through representation strictly on television. 2020's "Visible: Out on Television," streaming on Apple TV+, combines archival footage with new interviews to explore homophobia and the evolution of LGBTQ+ characters on television. Narrators and guests include several actors and actresses in the Broadway Stages family, including nonbinary actor Asia Kate Dillon of "Billions," Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and Billy Porter of "Pose," and Laverne Cox of "Orange is the New Black."

We encourage you to watch these documentary films or series this month in celebration of Pride Month (and throughout the year) and learn about the accomplishments of those in the LGBTQ+ community.

Queens Proud | Morsher’s Pork Store

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Broadway Stages. In celebration of our 40th trip around the sun, we are shining the spotlight on the heart of our community – the local businesses that provide the essential or simply enjoyable goods and services that allow us to thrive and delight in this great city we call home. We continue our series in the borough where it all began, Queens, and feature the local shops that line our streets, providing our neighbors, family, and friends a livelihood. Join us on our journey and get to know the people and businesses that make our community home. Today, we take you to Morscher’s Pork Store, where you can find real ‘Treasures of Ridgewood!’

Morscher’s Pork Store opened their doors in 1957 on Catalpa Avenue in the heart of Ridgewood, New York. Butcher shops, once prevalent in the area, have shuttered over the decades, but Morscher’s has persevered, serving multiple generations of local families.

“The secret to our success, I always say, is that we always give the people good value for their money. People work hard for their money,” said Herbert Morscher.

Herbert, known to regulars as Herbie, joined the family butcher shop in 1981. He speaks German, as does his business partner Siegfried Strahl, a native of Germany. A third partner, Peter Kotarowski, speaks Polish, and several languages are represented among the staff behind the counter. In fact, their website is also available in both German and Polish! “When the customer comes into the store, and they speak a certain language, you want the customer to feel comfortable,” Herbie said. “It’s important.”

Morscher’s Pork Store combines state-of-the-art meat processing with the meat-making traditions of old European butchery. Family recipes handed down through generations and specialties from Germany, Austria, and Eastern European countries guarantee a truly international and unique array of meat offerings.

In addition to all freshly prepared meats and cold cuts, an array of European food specialties, including German cookies and baking products, Polish pickles, Yugoslavian jams, and Slovenian condiments, line the shelves.

Morscher’s also offers catering services with delectable options such as whole roasted pig and vibrant cold-cut platters made with house-smoked and cured meats.

The shop is open Tuesday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. You can reach the store at (718) 821-1040. Also, check out their Instagram and Facebook pages to keep an eye on new inventory, promotions, and events that carnivores all around the city will not want to miss.

So, if you’re looking for a cut above what you can find at your usual grocery store, head over to Morscher’s Pork Store and when you get there, tell them Broadway Stages sent you.

National LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce | New York Chapter

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Throughout this month, Broadway Stages is excited to celebrate and recognize a few of our many LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors. We encourage you to join the celebrations throughout the city this month and to patronize the LGBTQ+ businesses in your neighborhood year-round! Today, we share information about the New York chapter of the National LBGTQ+ Chamber of Commerce and the work they are doing to advance economic opportunities for LGBTQ+ business owners.

The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce New York (nglccNY) provides its members with transformational networking and educational opportunities that increase the financial, intellectual, and social capital of the LGBTQ+ business community.

As the NY LGBTQ+  & Allied Business Network of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), nglccNY provides certification opportunities for Certified LGBT Business Enterprise® (Certified LGBTBE®)suppliers. This network of suppliers builds relationships with America’s leading corporations, generates prospective business and clients, and collectively teams with each other for contracting opportunities.

So how does nglccNY help LGBTQ+ business owners succeed? They give their members access to strategic partnerships, education, and access to capital and marketing platforms. Membership also provides discounts and helps gain procurement opportunities. And in keeping with the NYC Pride theme, “Strength in Solidarity,” they keep members on the forefront of legislative issues and provide advocacy for LGBTQ business causes and non-discriminatory affairs.

A large and dynamic organization, the nglccNY serves their members through diverse programs. Member’s Monthly Mixers, nglccNY Biz Pitch, Webinars, and Roundtables are only a few items on a growing list.

Broadway Stages Gives Back | North Brooklyn Community Boathouse

Broadway Stages has a long history of supporting initiatives that benefit the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the community. The North Brooklyn Community Boathouse is one of many organizations that have benefitted from our financial and in-kind support. Read more.

The North Brooklyn Community Boathouse (NBCB) is a nonprofit, volunteer-run community organization dedicated to enabling safe, responsible, human-powered boating access to the waterways of NYC. They also strive to educate residents about the history, ecology and sustainability of our urban waterways. Since 2010, NBCB’s volunteer trip leaders have taken thousands of people out on the water in kayaks, canoes, and rowing gigs. In addition to member trips that explore Newtown Creek, the East River and other NYC waterways, NBCB offers free monthly public paddles. The trips and workshops provided by the boathouse’s education program have served hundreds of community members and scores of students from local schools and colleges.

In November 2022, NBCB officially announced the construction of a new boathouse along the Newtown Creek in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The project is funded through a grant from the Newtown Creek Environmental Benefit Fund (NCEBF), and managed by the City Parks Foundation. Broadway Stages, on whose land the building is being constructed, is overseeing construction and has made significant financial contributions to the project. For the first time – and unique amongst boathouses in NYC – NBCB will own their facility and secure their access to the waterway in perpetuity.

The new boathouse will be close to 8,000 sq. ft. and provide ample space for boat and equipment storage, training and workshops, an environmental education center, offices, bathrooms, changing rooms, lockers, a kitchenette and more.
