NCA Hosts Urban Heat Island Effect Youth Fellowship Program

On Friday, August 26 Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) will proudly present the first Urban Heat Island (UHI) Research Fellows. They will display their research projects and answer questions during a poster session as they celebrate the conclusion of their intensive six-week program.

Made possible by a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), this NCA hosted program is intended for young adults aged 18 – 29 with an interest in improving the health and well-being of their communities and curiosity about green infrastructure and its role in mitigating the effects of the urban heat island effect.  The full-time paid research fellowship program will run for a total of three years.

Over the six-week period, the inaugural team of five UHI Research Fellows who hail from Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens learned about the role of scientific inquiry and longitudinal studies in environmental policy development. Their work included analysis of the temperature variations in the Long Island City and Sunnyside built environments. They were also able to practice fieldwork and data collection and contribute to improved knowledge of local environmental justice issues all within the context of Newtown Creek and its surrounding Industrial Business Zones (Maspeth, North Brooklyn, and Long Island City).

Join us in celebrating the NCA UHI Research Fellows and their important work!  For more information about the presentation and celebration click here.  For information about the program check the NCA website.
