On the bustling streets of New York City, there is a company that has been an unsung hero of the entertainment industry for well over a century. Walton Hauling, founded in 1879 by Wellington Walton, has been an integral part of New York's theater, film, and television scene. From its humble beginnings as a one-man operation near Union Square to its current status as a leading provider of hauling services in the heart of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Walton Hauling has not only shaped the landscape of showbiz, but also made a positive impact on the local community.
Wellington Walton's entrepreneurial spirit ignited the company's journey in the theater industry. With a single-hand truck, he started hauling props and personal effects for actors at the 14th St. Theatre. As the industry evolved and new forms of entertainment emerged, Walton Hauling embraced change. In the early 20th century, the company transitioned to motorized trucks, expanding its services to include the transfer of scenery, effects, and recording equipment. With a storage facility in Jersey City, they became an essential partner in the rapidly evolving entertainment landscape. By the mid-20th century, Walton Hauling had established itself as a trusted name in the entertainment industry. From the lights of Broadway to the airwaves of radio, Walton Hauling played an instrumental role in ensuring the smooth transportation of equipment, props, and sets that brought performances to life.
In 2012, the torch was passed to Al and Tommy Kharieh, who acquired the company and moved its operations to the vibrant neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. With this transition, Walton Hauling's focus shifted primarily to the film and television industry. The company more than doubled its fleet to meet the increased demand generated by New York State's Film Tax Incentive Program. Despite the change in ownership, Walton Hauling's unwavering dedication to the industry and its commitment to delivering top-quality services remains steadfast.
With their relocation to Greenpoint, Walton Hauling became an integral part of the local community. Their presence has had a positive impact on the neighborhood, providing employment opportunities to 15 full-time employees and approximately 200 seasonal teamsters over the course of a year. The company's presence in the area has not only contributed to the local economy, but also fostered a sense of pride and community spirit. Their commitment to service, quality of their equipment and solidarity with the Teamsters Local 817 who drive their trucks, has been the cornerstone of their success.
Walton Hauling's journey from a one-man operation in the theater district to a prominent hauling company in Greenpoint is a testament to their resilience and commitment to the constantly changing showbiz landscape. As they continue to transport the gear and equipment of countless performers and creators, Walton Hauling's impact on the industry and the local community will surely remain for generations to come.
