WE ARE NATURE 5 | GRITT: From New York to the Norwegian Woods
NOoSPHERE Arts’ WE ARE NATURE performance series continues on September 2 with an outdoor screening of the feature film Gritt. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Norwegian filmmaker Itonje Søimer Guttormsen.
“Gritt” builds on the characters and the fictional universe from Guttormsen’s short film Retrett. Renowned Norwegian film magazine Montages referred to Retrett as one of the best Norwegian films of all time.
The title character, Gritt (Birgitte Larsen), once called Gry-Jeanette, went straight from drama school to Hollywood with the dream of becoming an actress. The events of this film begin 17 years later in Oslo, where Gritt has returned after having failed to find either fame in Hollywood or notoriety in Berlin.
While her former student friends are making careers on Oslo’s theater stages, she is passionate about realizing a large, radical art project. However, when she receives yet another funding rejection and is thrown out of her apartment, Gritt’s situation becomes increasingly desperate. However, Gritt gets an internship at an underground theater company and secretly moves into their performance space. And while the theater group is on tour, Gritt begins her own performance, “The White Inflammation,” intending to expose a world of privilege, profit, and patriarchy.
Gritt is produced by Andropia and by Maria Ekerhovd of MER FILM. Andropia was established in 2008 as a label for Itonje Søimer Guttormsen’s artistic endeavors.
Based in Oslo, Guttormsen has a BA in Film Direction from The Norwegian Films School (2008) and an MFA in Processes of Filmmaking from Academy Valand, Gothenburg (2017). Before film school, she worked on several Norwegian film productions as director’s assistant, production manager, researcher, etc. while also studying philosophy, theater, theology, and art at the University of Oslo.
This outdoor screening will take place at Broadway Stages’ facilities located at 520 Kingsland Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222. Take a look at the trailer below, then reserve your spot HERE!
