NYC Audubon | Explore birds in the Staten Island Greenbelt
Broadway Stages is committed to supporting environmental sustainability in the boroughs in which we operate and across the city. A local organization that shares this core value is the New York City Audubon, a nonprofit that has worked to protect wild birds and habitat in the wetlands, forests, and grasslands across the City’s five boroughs for more than 40 years. Our own Gina Argento (Broadway Stages’ president and CEO) is proud to be part of NYC Audubon’s leadership team as a member of the board of directors. This week, we highlight opportunities for birding in the Staten Island Greenbelt.
The Staten Island Greenbelt’s 2,800-acres are home to NYC natural areas and parks where locals can enjoy nature and wildlife, including a diverse bird population. With woodlands, swamps, kettle ponds, and lakes, the Greenbelt offers visitors opportunities to explore preserved habitat that hosts nesting woodland species such as Cooper’s Hawk, Great Horned Owl, and most recently, Pileated Woodpecker.
For those new to the Greenbelt, NYC Audubon’s website recommends the Greenbelt Nature Center as a good starting off and orientation point. NYC Audubon also provides online guides to the following Greenbelt popular birding spots that allow public access:
Latourette Park (including Bucks Hollow)
William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge
At the links above, you will find listings of the various birds in each park by season, indications of how productive the birding is during the seasons, and links to eBird hotspot records for each location. You can also find location descriptions and logistical topics including maps, when to go, directions, visiting, and safety. Plus, there are links to organizations, including NYC Audubon, which offer guided bird and nature walks.
Get outside this summer and explore the birds of the Greenbelt! For example, this summer in Brookfield Park the birding is rated very productive for Foraging herons, egrets, and ibis; Osprey; breeding birds including Clapper Rail, Chimney Swift, Willow Flycatcher, Tree, Barn, and Bank Swallows, Fish Crow, Warbling Vireo, Marsh Wren, Yellow Warbler, and Indigo Bunting. Visit the NYC Audubon Staten Island Greenbelt page to learn about the exciting natural world awaiting you in these parks and natural areas.
