WE ARE NATURE (WAN) 2: Solstice Celebration
On Saturday, June 25, join our friends at NOoSPHERE Arts for the Solstice Celebration, the second event of the WE ARE NATURE (WAN) summer performance series. WAN celebrates and explores our ecosphere through live arts, applied arts, and evidence-based knowledge. The celebration will be from 6:30 to 9:30 pm @ Kingsland Wildflowers in Brooklyn.
The Solstice Celebration will be the Inti Raymi (Quechua for “Inti festival”), a traditional ceremony of the Incan religion. The festival (winter solstice in the territories south of the equator) honors Inti, the Incan sun god, and is typically celebrated on June 24.
Ñukanchik Llakta Wawakuna, Ñawpa Mashikuna, and Comunidad Andida from the Andes and local practitioners of Danza Mexica will share their culture and energy with us through dance. Grammy-nominated artist Melvis Santa and her band, La Rumba de Santa, will provide music. Afro-Cuban drumming, dance, and call-and-response will call back the spirits and traditions rooted in Africa and maintained in Cuba.
Internationally renowned ecoliteracy scholar Fritjof Capra will profess wisdom on the topic of Nature’s Cycles. And Santera Mayor and priestess of Oshun, La Aurora, will convey Mensajes Espirituales on Kingsland Wildflowers’ Lower Meadow. If you would like to receive guidance from this, please sign up in advance with your full name to la.aurora.readings@gmail.com.
The site-specific installation Rise of a Missing Planet will be on display on the Upper Meadow of Kingsland Wildflowers. The eco-feminist take on ancient celestial mythology is the creation of Brazilian artist Sabrina Barrios, winner of Broadway Stages’ first Artist Residency Award. The installation will be featured throughout the WAN 2022 season.
WE ARE NATURE 2022 is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). In addition, our programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
Thanks to the sponsors of NOoSPHERE Arts, they are able to offer donation-based admission to this summer’s string of outdoor performances. Funds raised through patron contributions will provide crucial support towards continued arts programming across our super Fun site on the bank of Newtown Creek.
Please join us as we celebrate solstice on Broadway Stages’ rooftop at Kingsland Wildflowers.
