Welcome to Broadway Stages’ Spotlight, where we feature local shops, restaurants, organizations, individuals, and venues. During the month of November, we are expressing our gratitude to those who make our city great by providing services, support, and fellowship to our neighbors. This week we shine the spotlight on Sunnyside Community Services in Queens!

Broadway Stages is grateful to be part of the community in Queens and honored to play a role in supporting great organizations like Sunnyside Community Services.

Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a nonprofit organization centered on the belief that every person deserves meaningful support to achieve their aspirations, regardless of challenges they may be facing. Established in 1974, today SCS serves approximately 14,000 individuals per year, providing support to a diverse community of all ethnicities, income levels, and ages throughout Queens. The various programs provided by SCS are really making a difference.

●       For teens and young adults, their services include pre-kindergarten and after-school programs, college prep, and career programs.

●       For seniors, there is a vibrant center for older adults, dedicated home care services, and support and assistance for family caregivers.

●       And for people with cognitive and physical impairments, they provide a social adult day program.

With so many wide-ranging programs and services, there is a high demand for volunteers. As of 2020, Sunnyside Community Services was recognized as a Service Enterprise by Points of Light — the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service.

Volunteer opportunities include tutoring and assisting young people with homework or educational enrichment activities. If cooking if your thing, you can help prepare or serve meals in the Center for Active Older Adults or teach a class on a topic that interests you. Some volunteers enjoy visiting older adults who are homebound and in need of companionship and a friendly face.
