Head Outside for Winter Fun

As part of our commitment to environmental sustainability in the boroughs where our production facilities are located, Broadway Stages encourages our neighbors to explore and learn about the many parks and outdoor spaces that call NYC home. Whether you are a nature lover or prefer the urban landscape, you don’t have to look far for opportunities. Read on for a few suggestions that will allow you to have a fun outdoor experience with family, friends or solo.

Nature lovers can take a nature walk or hike at the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge or other parks in the Staten Island Greenbelt. Or check out the cool, outdoor events at NYC Parks, including (this coming weekend) -- observing seals in the waters off Staten Island (Saturday, January 15), and Winter Tree ID with a hike at Von Briesen Park, also on Staten Island (Sunday, January 16). Other January events include a Nature Meditation Hike at Salt Marsh Nature Center in Marine Park, Brooklyn (Saturday, January 22) and a history walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park, Queens (Sunday, January 23). See the NYC Parks website for more nature-related events happening this winter.

Prefer an urban view rather than full-on nature? Get to know the NYC area better by planning an urban hike. According to MyFitnessPal, “Instead of rocky paths and mountains, urban hikers seek out city parks, multi-use paths and stairways that connect public roads and unexplored areas of a city.” See their blog post, “What You Need to Know About Urban Hiking” for tips on planning your own urban hike. Or participate in another outside, urban experience by getting your (ice) skate on with family and friends at the Wollman Rink in Central Park or The Rink at Rockefeller Center.

So, grab your hat, gloves, and other weather-appropriate attire, and head outside to take in some fresh air, view diverse wildlife and scenery, and enjoy fun activities. Before you go, remember to not only check the weather forecast, but also see the venue’s website for any registration, fee, or COVID-related requirements.
