"The Crown," "Ted Lasso," Clean Up at the Emmys
London was the big winner at this year’s Emmy Award ceremony, as “The Crown” and “Ted Lasso” won the event’s coveted Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, respectively, and nearly swept the acting categories as well. However, New York saw some love from Emmy voters too, as Ewan McGregor took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role in “Halston,” a Netflix drama filmed right here at Broadway Stages. “Saturday Night Live,” which has been airing on NBC live from New York City for more than 45 years, also enjoyed a great night, winning multiple awards including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. This is quite the achievement given that while most of New York City shut down during the pandemic, the iconic sketch show found creative ways to stay on the air and keep people laughing during these challenging times.
Another big winner was “Mare of Easttown.” The HBO limited series won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Kate Winslett and supporting acting awards for Evan Peters and Julianne Nicholson. Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and director Scott Frank took home an Emmy as well. The popular limited series also won multiple technical awards, including recognitions for its period-era costumes and makeup. HBO Max’s “Hacks” was also a big winner, with Jean Smart honored as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and the show winning directing and writing awards too.
Several shows filmed at Broadway Stages were up for multiple awards and did not leave empty-handed. FX’s series “Pose,” which wrapped up its third and final season this year, was recognized with three awards for its contemporary costumes, hairstyling, and makeup. While these technical awards may not garner much attention from TV viewers, we know how much hard work goes into creating these programs behind the scenes, so we are thrilled to see those talented artists recognized by their peers. We are also so proud of the success of HBO’s “The Flight Attendant,” which was nominated for multiple awards and won in the category of Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
Congratulations to all winners and nominees. We are thrilled that filming has returned to our soundstages and your TV screens, and we cannot wait to see what is in store for the year ahead!
