"Detective Chinatown 3" | Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
The “Detective Chinatown” film series is one of the most popular of all time in Mainland China. The third installment of the action-comedy-mystery franchise recently broke major box office records when it pulled in $424 million opening weekend in China. That is the biggest opening weekend ever in a single territory, beating previous record holder “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned more than $357 million in the U.S. and Canada when it opened in 2019.
The film was initially planned for release in China for the 2020 Chinese New Year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When it was finally released in February 2021 it was welcomed by an enthusiastic audience. “Detective Chinatown 3” earned $104 million in advance sales alone for its opening day. Now that is something to brag about!
The series is about two interesting characters who are distant relatives, Tang Ren and Qin Feng, played by Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran, who find themselves in the midst of a murder they must solve. In the second series, Tang and Qin team up to solve a murder in New York’s Chinatown. And in the third film the characters are invited to Tokyo to investigate yet another crime that leads to a battle between the strongest detectives in Asia. Definitely binge worthy entertainment folks!
We are thrilled with the success of the film series and offer our sincere congratulations to the films’ director Chen Sicheng, as well as the cast and crew, who we worked with in 2018 as the production studio for “Detective Chinatown 2.” We wish Sicheng and all involved continued success and most certainly welcome them back to New York and Broadway Stages to create another box office hit!
