Celebrating the Arts | REEL Works - 20 Years of Media Arts Education

Founded in 2001, Reel Works provides free, intensive in-school and after-school filmmaking workshops for over 800 at-risk youth from New York City. It is the only youth media program in the country that matches each teen participant one-on-one with a professional filmmaker-mentor; a powerful combination that unlocks young talents, unleashes young voices and changes young lives. Through various programs Reel Works is creating pathways for diverse youth in film and television, playing a leading role in training tomorrow’s storytellers for New York City’s $8.7 billion film, television and media industry. That means they are foundationally nurturing and developing the future workforce required to realize a diverse and thriving TV/film industry well into the future. Their partnership with MediaMKRS complements Reel Works by working to diversity the media landscape and level the hiring field by bringing together industry leaders, educators, and local government to train and credential rising talent. Reel Works’ films have earned five Student Emmy’s, countless festival honors and reached millions of viewers worldwide. In 2007, Reel Works received the Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Council on the Humanities – the nation’s top honor for after school arts programs.
